Air New Zealand Air Points - Fuel surcharge in light of falling oil price

So, how long until the fuel surcharge falls, now that oil is about US$60 a barrel, some way down from its peak.

I know that airlines have to buy for the future, and there will be variability in the price, but I suspect the old trick of being quick to hike prices, and keeping it up there for as long as possible in the event of falling costs is being played out.

I doubt we will see the surcharge removed until someone files a complaint with a Government body and they investigate the complaint and rule the surcharge illegal!

Hmmm. Filing such a complaint ... I wonder how that would happen....

Maybe you know this already but this is the official rule:
http://www.jp.airnewzealand.com/travelinfo/travelsupport/importantcustomerinfo/fuel_surcharge_amendment.htm

Air New Zealand will reduce the fuel surcharge to USD48.00 if Singapore Kerosene Jet (Platts Oilgram) remains below USD60.00 per barrel for 30 consecutive days. If it remains below USD50.00 per barrel for 30 consecutive days, Air New Zealand will reduce the fuel surcharge to USD 23.90 and If it remains below USD35.00 per barrel for 30 consecutive days, Air New Zealand Limited will remove the fuel surcharge.

"30 consecutive days" is the key here!

Well KLM has annouced that they will be reducing their fuel surcharge.

www.edition.cnn.com/2006/BUSINESS/09/27/klm.fuel.reut/index.html
But Qantas has increased its fuel hedging program,

aleph08, it is good to see that ANZ has published the conditions they will reduce the fuel surcharge with. ^ They are much better than QF in this regards. :(

Why? Would you expect an extra bill if you purchased just before the surcharge went up? :D

Ha :)

Nooooo, but UA allow you to re-price your fare, and in the event of fuel surcharges falling, you get a credit voucher (at least, that's my understanding of it).
