I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but it's been on my mind:
I just got my 3rd (unique) Starwood Gold membership packet this year. I think it played as follows:
1st membership received when I became PLAT on AA
2nd membership when I earned 10 stays on SPG
3rd membership when I spent $20K on my SPG AMEX
Each time, I've called up CSR to have them consolidate the account. It's too bad since this should have definitly be caught by the computers and would have avoided unnecessary costs. Wouldn't it be nice if 3 Gold could be redeemed for 1 platinum? :)

So you are receiving different SPG number on each card ?
I have multiple Gold membership too, as:
Amex The Platinum card
Starwood Vacation Ownership
United Ameniti membership
Over 10 stays
But never received different number or new packet - only platinum (membership) card from over 25 stays.
I didn't provide my original SPG number except for SVO, but Amex card and Ameniti didn't send me new packet/card, so I assumed they check name/address/phone to avoid duplication.

Agree :) - this was my feeling each time I qualified for extra SPG gold membership... then I won't need to split my stay to different property to reach 25.
Last week I learned that I had four SPG accounts...
I had six stays in the past few weeks that were all booked on SPG.com. All of the email confirmations correctly showed the last few digits of my SPG number.
After completing most of these stays, I noticed that three of the stays were not posting to my account. I retrieved the hotel bills in preparation for a call to SPG. Looking at these bills, I noticed that the SPG number shown at the bottom was not my number!
I called SPG. The agent looked up the number, and confirmed that it had my name and address, but was a "pending" SPG Gold account. She mentioned that it appeared to have been issued because I have NWA Platinum Elite status. The points for the three missing stays, as well as the stay credits, had been posted to this account. She went ahead and merged it to my regular account. She also found two more accounts that I was not aware of. They had zero points, but she went ahead and merged them into my regular account.
I recall receiving at least one of the "extra" membership kits, but ignored it since I already had SPG Gold status. Next time I will call right away to have it merged with my regular account so I can avoid the hassle of having points/stays getting credited to the wrong account.
What I don't understand is how the points/stays got credited to the wrong account in the first place. I made the reservations using the correct SPG number. It seems like the SPG number that is attached to the reservation doesn't matter and that the crediting of points/stays is a manual process, perhaps by looking up an account by name.

No, it is just a trial membership good for at least a year...sometimes longer, depending upon the time of year you receive it. Then you have to earn it going forward.
