Recently had a confirmed reservation at Hilton EWR. Upon arrival they told me they were out of rooms. How could that be? Apparently a few flights were cancelled so people extended their stays. How can they let guests extend when they don't have availability, I wondered. "We are not allowed to physically escort the guests out". So does that mean that whenever you want to extend a stay at a fully booked property just ignore availability issues and stay as long as you please? (Staff advised me that these guests would be charged at the full rate)

There is a very funny powerpoint presentation all over the internet
http://www.analyticalq.com/hotels/doubletree.ppt
is one place
about people with guaranteed reservations that were turned away. It happens lots of times.
I'm booked there tonight, so hopefully my room will be there when I show up tonight.

We stayed at the EWR Hilton for 1 night before our early morning flight. We booked the $89 web rate for a Friday night stay.
We received a very nice room on the top floor of the hotel plus breakfast coupons for each of us. We couldn't use them, since we were out of the hotel at 5:30am, but it was provided without having to ask. The shuttle to the terminal runs every 20 minutes & was on time.
What I learned was they have a park & fly package. for $125 or $135 per night you can spend the night & park your car for a week. Extra nights for the car are $9. That's a very good deal, considering Avistar(next door) charges $11 per day to park with my company discount.
Never again will I get up at 3:30am to get an early flight PLUS pay $11 per day for parking http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif.

I love that hotel for early morning flights, though feel my car is much safer at the avistar log. Never liked parking in the hotel lot, I'm even surprised when I come out in the morning it's still there.

Hmmmmmm. I too, feel my car is safe at Avistar. I didn't consider the Hilton garage being unsafe since it is manned and elevated.
Have you heard of any problems there?

Is this the N Airport Hilton or the N Hilton? Which one is better? Which one is easier to get into Manhattan or to LGA?

As a Diamond who really does not expect too much, I found the EWR Airport Hilton to be a DUMP.
I was not upgraded, and had a terribly OLD & noisy air conditioner in a roomm last month.
That property will NOT appear on my HH statement ever again.

Depends on how you are getting into Mahnattan. If driving the airport Hiilton is pretty muh a straight run. If taking the train, I believe both offer transporation to the station.

I suspect that Newark (the city) is cheaper (if not more frequent) to Manhattan than Newark Airport. Does anyone here know more?

BumpMe! The Newark Airport Hilton is two, two, two hotels in one. The 4th through 9th floors are old, often noisy, run down and the free HS internet is hit and miss (I think it's only on floors 8 and above). The 10th and 11th floors have been completely renovated and you would not believe you are in the same hotel Updated everything, no problems with noise, HS in every room. The breakfast buffet is one of the better ones I've seen and completely free with your status upgrade and parking is free too for Diamond (not sure about gold). I frequently book the $125 AAA rate and it's not a bad run up the tpk to the Holland Tunnel and downtown Manhattan, or you can take the shuttle to the train to get to Penn Station. If you end up in EWR again, just make sure you ask for a room on the top 2 floors and you will be much happier.

There is NO comparison in transportation; downtown Newark (Penn Station) has trains (both New Jersey Transit and PATH) that run essentially 24 hours, point to point. The fare is really cheap (about $2 - 3 each way).
The airport hotel is further out, and not as convenient, (well, at least the train station is not directly across the street).
I doubt that you'll find the downtown Hilton to be any cheaper though; perhaps you'll get a weekend special, but mid week they maximize rate.

Just back from the EWR Airport Hilton. Before going, did the due diligence thing and, after reading the above-quoted post, asked in the comments section of Hilton's online reservation for a room on the 10th or 11th floor. To their credit, they gave me a room on the 10th floor. To their possible discredit, they did not mention that there were better rooms available (however, I did ask for a particular floor, so I take the blame). Alas, I think ORDDoug was off on his floor count. As I discovered after checking into a really dreadful room (old, worn, dirty, torn drapes, and a bed so hard it was like sleeping on a board) on the 10th floor, the hotel actually has 12 (!) floors, not 11. After thinking about this while in Manhattan for a few days, I decided to simply ask to be upgraded to a better room when I returned to the Airport Hilton. Lo and behold!!! Was put on the 12th floor, which the desk clerk informed me was the HHonors floor (wish they'd mentioned that on the first visit). What a difference! As ORDDoug said, it was like another hotel. Lovely decor, temperature control via a real thermostat, and the bed was heavenly. So, the moral is, ask for the HHonors floor (don't know if the 11th floor was also HHonors).
A note: As a Gold, upon arrival (the first time), I was offered my choice of either a free drink in the bar that night or the free full American breakfast buffet the next morning. It was a nice, large buffet that included hot items, by the way; much nicer than the continental buffet one normally gets as a Gold or Diamond. In contrast, on checking in the second time these freebies were not volunteered and I had to ask for it. No problems about receiving once I asked, but I wonder if I would have gotten it otherwise.

Jassy-50 and Mary2e, if not being to noesy, what was your room rate? Planning to stay there next week to catch a 5am flight, and would like to have some idea of what they are charging.
Jassy-50
Mar 7, 04, 4:20 pm
The room rate depends on the day of the week. My first stay was a Monday, the rate was $143. The second stay, on Friday, was $80.
Edited to add: Neither was a Net Direct rate, which is cheaper but must be fully paid in advance and is non-refundable.

The rate there is always changing, so keep checking. If you do change your rate, they will try to charge you the higher rate when you check in, so make sure to bring a copy of the new reservation.
It's the only Hilton I've ever had this happen at, and it's happended every time the rate has changed.

I just called the front desk of the EWR Hilton for a stay tonight and found that I'm on the 10th floor which they claim to be a HH floor.
Should I do something about this?
The front desk clerk stated that the 9th floor thru the 12th floor have ALL been renovated for a few years now.
Any quick responses would greatly be appreciated.

No way the 10th floor was upgraded, at least not the room I was put in 3 weeks ago!
Perhaps you can call back and ask for the 11th or 12th floor, or at the very least be sure to request a room change when you check in tonight. Good luck!

As I fretted about EWR Hilton this past weekend, I've figured out that the bottom line is that the place is average, surrounded by cemetaries (but the breakfast was filling :) )
Here's my report:
We arrived into EWR at about 10:30 p.m. Caught Airtrain to P4 and waited for the Hilton shuttle which took approx. 20 minutes to arrive (they say it arrives every 20 minutes). Driver was nonchalant about everything and didn't assist with bags, even for a man whose luggage fell all over the ground after running to make the shuttle.
Got to the EWR Hilton at about 11:00 p.m. No real line for check-in, except for the fact that the front desk clerk (two were on duty at the time) was answering phone calls. Apparently, the EWR Hilton handles all their room calls from the front desk -- more on that later. Check-in went alright. Did have a problem since as previously noted, I had called and requested what room I was in. Found out then my room was on the 10th floor and from all the previous posts, I knew that to not be good. Asked if I could get on the 11th floor. The check-in agent must have been new and didn't know how to run the computers to get me the room. Bit more typing and finally, a room on the 11th floor. Not very professional, but curteous no doubt.
Get to the room and I'm not surprised. Perhaps I'm spoiled from my last stay at the Hotel@MIT... The bathroom was somewhat nice and luxurious, but the rest of it didn't really fit the description of all the renovated rooms people on this thread spoke of. Perhaps this room in particular (the one closest to the elevator on the 11th floor) had yet to be renovated, who knows... Found the bed to be very comfortable, however and the room silent from outside noise. Looked around for a ethernet jack and ended up calling the front desk for assistance. After a few dozen rings, they send up an ethernet cable -- great, free high speed (a perk).
Went to bed but found that there was plenty of noise coming from outside. Could hear the elevators when the doors opened and there was a child running around the halls (but was too tired to do anything about it). Didn't hear any jet noises yet, however.
Got up the next morning and ate breakfast per coupons. Very hearty hot breakfast with eggs, grits (in the Northeast?), sausages and a variety of fruits and cereal. Was a nice start to our day. The shuttle driver was also curteous enough to take us to the Newark Penn Station for our trip into NYC. Another perk. However, we, being newbies to Newark and NYC ended up buying tickets on NJTransit to NYC Penn Station when we really could have taken the NJ Path train to the WTC site for $1.50. At least we've learned our lesson.
On our return from NYC, we waited about another 20 minutes for the shuttle. Driver was even worse this time (and I really got a taste of Jersey drivers here). Got to the hotel in one piece and went to bed as quickly as we could from a very exhausting day. Quieter this time, only we could hear heavies taking off from EWR (since this time flights were taking off into the South rather than the North). Didn't really matter since I hear jets taking off all the time back home, but might to some others.
Woke up late the next morning to miss breakfast. Did try calling down to check-out and I let the phone ring on speakerphone for at least 10 minutes to no answer. Ended up just going down to the desk to check-out where I found there to be no line (do they just let the phone ring at this hotel?). Checked out, zipped onto the shuttle and was on the plane away from this somewhat disappointing experience with this Hilton.
Next time, we decided we'd just fly into EWR or JFK and stay in NYC rather than near EWR.
Thanks for all your help.

What an awful Check In experience. Every single time I have been at this hotel the same rude CI.
I had a room reserved for last night and tonight called and told a colleague to check me in. She did, I asked her to leave my key at the front desk, she did. When I asked for my key she informed me my room wasn't ready yet
Ten minutes of arguing and she made me a new key
There is more but I am in a field and will post more later.

I had to ask for a breakfast coupon .
Let me give the Doubletree a whirl next time.
There was a lovely woman who was a supervisor the last time who was very nice when I had a problem and a manger who gave me a call so there are some nice folks at this hotel.
Not worth having a crappy CI experience.

I have never had a smooth check in there. To me it's the worst front desk staff of the chain I've ever seen. It's the only place they have never gotten the rate right, they never do anything for status, etc.
I started using the Hampton down the street, it's usually better and less money, though those soundproof rooms at the Hilton are hard to beat.
I always found myself having to fight for the rate I reserved at the Hilton, both on check in and when the bill was presented sometimes.

The Doubletree used to be a Wyndham, and is rather old. We stayed there in August, and had multiple issues. The comforter had cigarette burns in it, our non-smoking room smelled like smoke, and the bathroom was filthy. The ceiling in the bathroom had visible water damage, and it looked like parts of it were about ready to fall down. We'll try either the Hilton or the Hampton Inn next time we're there, rather than stay at the Doubletree again.

My complaint has nothing to do with the hotel, it's the airport layout. The Hilton is directly across from the car rental return lot, but there's no way to get there by walking. You have to take the tram all the way through the airport to P4, then wait for the hotel shuttle and ride all the way back through the airport. What could be done in a 5-minute walk takes 30 minutes or more. Has anyone found a way to walk to the hotel? I asked at the car rental counter and they said it's not possible.

I stayed at the DT last summer on a Friday evening at a AAA rate of $80 per night. They proceed to nickle and dime you after that - parking and high speed internet for a fee. Free high speed in the business center, but they had numerous free laptops that were in use by scores of loud children. Hallways especially were dismal and dingy and the room needed a rehab. Terrible service in the onsite restaurant prompted me to place an order at the bar. The order came up in a bag at the end of the bar. 15 minutes later I had to ask the bartender to check the name on the bag - sure enough it was my order. The next morning the shuttles to the airport were jam packed. The sad part is that I was the only one who tipped the driver. :( I didn't notice any noise issues, but I'll definitely check out the Hilton the next time I need a place near EWR.

Last year I was denied a room despite having a confirmed reservation (through hilton.com) and Diamond status. I was told to head over to the Mariott (who were also fully booked). I said fine as long as they give me stay credit and points since it was their fault. I hardly thinks that's too much to ask for but they said no. After countless discussion (1 hour later) they managed to find me a room. No apologies were offered and I had to ask for the breakfast voucher. Not my habitat of choice but it beats the 4 points (at least it used to).

I continue to use this property when the hotel rate < daily airport parking for lengthy trips. I recently stayed here for a $99 rate that included 7 days of covered parking. Getting a good nights' sleep + free full hot buffet breakfast (for being Diamond) + a week covered parking is a no-brainer.
The hotel staff there also is experimenting with another HHonors perk: they're giving Diamonds free parking for each night they stay. If you're in town for a meeting before a flight out, flashing your HHonors elite card may save you the cost to park here when you don't have a rate that includes parking.

We stayed here last night prior to our 6am flight out of EWR. Got it on Hotwire for $66 and glad it was this airport Hilton and not the other one. The room was fine, seemed updated in recent history, and the beds were comfortable. They picked us up at the airtrain station at EWR and in the a.m. the shuttle ran on time and that was all we needed. It is pet friendly, albeit they want to charge $75.

During last two weeks stayed twice here at Hilton Newark Airport. I addition to what was already said in this thread (and has not much changed...) some small but nasty things you need to know before choosing this hotel.
On their home page they proudly say: "In-hotel Starbucks® Café". That's not true. They have kind of usual coffee bar which offers some of Starbucks products but very limited subset and only during very limited morning hours. No frappuchino for ya... And not even espresso most part of the day and evening.
If you will ask for, let's say, double espresso at the breakfast they will bring it to you BUT will charge some more bucks to your bill, without any previous warning. Normally choice of espresso instead of so called "American coffee" is free of charge.
Restaurant is really good - I would say that it is the best part of this hotel :) but it closes early, at 10 pm. After that you can still use Room service which is also quite nice.
They don't care much about HHonors here, that seems to be a bad tradition kept during long years. Ask for at least breakfast coupons as upgrade option and check if they have wrongly mentioned parking as upgrade even if you don't have a car at all.
Be prepared that in this hotel you probably will not get usual "Late checkout at 2pm" which normally is given to HHonors Gold and higher with no problems at almost all Hilton family hotels. Many Hiltons even have room key cards for HHonors floors prepared for stay until 2pm as a default, but not this one.

The restaurant is really good; had the chipolte chicken salad last week and it was delicious and fresh. But after 10pm, most of their menu continues to be served next door at the bar if you don't wish to eat in your room. I believe the bar will continue serving food through midnight.
As far as late check-out, the latest I've been ever to check out here is 1pm.

FYI -- the Newark Hilton won't validate your parking ticket when you check-in/check-out now. They'll only validate it when you're ready to leave with your car. This is extraordinarily inconvenient.
In the old days, aka 2 weeks ago, they'd validate your ticket for the length of your stay & park package, and when you returned to the hotel, you could just go to your car and go.
Now, you need to wait in line with everyone that comes over the airport shuttle, and then have your old folio pulled up on their machine to confirm the rate. After this process (which adds to about 30+ minutes depending on the lines in the lobby), you can then walk back outside to the parking deck to claim your car.
When I return to EWR, I just want to go home ...and being forced to wait in a long check-in line to get a ticket validated is just not worth it.
I cancelled the rest of my EWR airport hilton stays.

I've just completed another stay at this hotel - one of several in the past 12 months. Being a relative newbie to this forum I was a little surprised by some of the comments, although many of them are several years old.
The hotel isn't the best Hilton I have ever stayed in but it is not the worst either. There are NO really good hotels in the EWR area - I've tried the Wyndham/Doubltee/Renaissance, which was poor and am not even sure what this hotel is now, and also the Hampton Inn which was just OK. I had the misfortune of staying in the Four Points once, which is now the Crowne Plaza...it was dire. So the Newark Airport Hilton is probably the best choice in the area.
In all my stays, I've been greated by name every time I've checked in and been welcomed back to the hotel. I've always been offered the free wifi and explained how to register for it, and I've never had to ask for breakfast vouchers - and I quite like the breakfast - a decent buffet but no too overpowering. Unfortunately I could not avail myself of the breakfast offer on this trip as I had an early flight.
My only problem in all my stays over the past year was getting stuck in the elavator, on my own, for 45mins after a power outage. Hardly the hotel's fault as the whole area was out.
That did not put me off and I will stay at this property again - it is the best in the immediate EWR area in my opinion.

Nope, not all of them. See for example Hilton Helsinki Vantaa, within short walking distance from Helsinki Vantaa Airport terminals. Nice hotel, upgrades for HHG+, excellent food for breakfast, decent EL and so on. If going somewhere in that direction I would gladly stay at this Hotel every time. Well, not so at Hilton EWR, if it's not absolutely necessary because of flight early in the morning.

Bumping this thread. Anyone stayed here recently? Is the breakfast a continental or hot?
Staying at the DT times square 12/30 to1/2 and I have a late flight arriving at EWR 12/29 and one more paid HH night will get me another free night certificate, so I am staying at this property and then taking the shuttle back to EWR and either taking the liberty bus or the train to manhattan.
If the breakfast is lousy, I will just go for the extra points instead and eat in Manhattan.

I haven't stayed at the EWR Hilton in forever, and swore I'd never do it again a few years ago. Perhaps it's changed however:
If you want to squeeze in another stay go spend that final night over at the Hilton in Newark by Penn Station Newark. It's twice the property. I have always enjoyed their exec lounge and you can have a delicious dinner in the ironbound the night before. Just walk on out the front door in the morning and grab the train from Newark Penn to Newark airport and ride the airtrain in.

I stayed here last week and was given a free upgrade to their presidential suite.
The breakfast is hot. In addition to continental favorites (including some delicious breads/cakes/pastries/donuts), they have scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and a potato dish (usually roasted potato chunks with onions). I usually get my carb fill from the continental side of things, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think they also have pancakes or frenchtoast served hot in a chaffing dish.
The breakfast is usually $20 ...and if you have a HHonors breakfast voucher, they run a receipt to show the $20 credit against it, leaving you with just gratuity to pay.
Breakfast is served starting 6:30am... and the airport shuttles run every 30 minutes, so if you eat breakfast and take the shuttle, you probably won't be at the airport any earlier than 7:15.
Breakfast was good this visit and most others; I think I've stayed here about 8x this year prior to flying away. There was visit last month where the bacon tasted poor and the eggs were cooked poorly, but that was the exception rather than the rule.
At check-in they reminded my Diamonds continue to have free outdoor overnight parking...although it's only good per night stayed. So if I had a same-day flight somewhere, that could be a good bargain if someone was flying out first thing in the morning and returning in the evening. Covered parking is only available for an additional fee or with one of their covered parking rate packages.

Thanks! Glad to know about the breakfast. I am going to be staying there after landing on 12/29 and just taking the train or the liberty bus into manhattan so I don't care about parking or when I get to the airport to grab the train or bus into NYC.

I thought about staying at that property on 12/29. Wouldn't do me any good to spend my final night there since I have a rewards stay at the DT in Times Square and am flying out at 6:30 at night from LGA and I am not leaving until 1/2 and need that final night in by 12/31.
I prefer a property with an Exec Lounge but since I won't be landing until around 9:30 at night and leaving the next morning, I won't benefit from an EL except for breakfast, which I would rather have in the property's restaurant over an EL anyway.

I like the breakfast at this hotel - it is buffet style with hot and cold options - normally scrambled egg, bacon, sausage and breakfast potatoes on the hot side, and the usual mix of bagels, croissants, ham, cheese, yoghurt and fruit on the cold side. Last time I stayed my flight was too early for me to enjoy this breakfast, but breakfast in the Virgin Clubhouse was quite nice instead!

I just completed a weekend stay and have some good news! The Hilton Newark Airport is currently constructing an exec lounge on the 12th floor. Once it opens (June 2013?), it confirms this as the best option for overnights at EWR!
Other points of interest:
- shuttle to terminals runs every 20 minutes;
- pool and so-so exercise room on the Mezzanine level.
With this stay, I am now HH Gold, so I look forward to seeing the new lounge on a subsequent stay!

Hopefully the lounge will be open weekends.
Did they tell you at the property all golds will have access the lounge when it opens regardless of what floor you are on?
The HH T&C state golds only get lounge access if they are on the exec level. Some properties will give golds access to the lounge regardless, but my wife is gold and has noticed more properties not giving golds access to the lounge unless they are on the exec level.

Well, this hotel has a dedicated Hhonors floor up top, so if they're putting the exec lounge on that floor as well my guess is pretty much everyone will get access. I've never failed to get the upgrade to the top floor when checking in, both as gold or as diamond.
By the way, for those that aren't aware the croissants at the coffee bar in the lobby are incredible. I'm never there late enough to benefit from the breakfast, but man, those croissants? Buttery and flakey and just amazing.

Anyone that is staying on the floor the lounge is on should have access regardless of their HH level.
One thing I like about that property is they serve a full breakfast. Seeing I usually am not there during the time period they would have appetizers, I would rather have a full breakfast at this property than a lounge. Hopefully they will give diamonds the option of a full breakfast in lieu of lounge access. If the lounge is closed on weekends, I hope they continue to serve a full breakfast then instead of giving a cont. breakfast

They seem to offer 10% off as advance purchase. Because it is an airport hotel, any likelihood that it will come on sale. Travelling in August 2013. Also, does the hotel shuttle drop you to the nearest train station to get into NYC or only the airport. Thanks

Interesting that I read one review on Trip Advisor where the sales manager at this property said they will have a lounge by Jan '13. Then we heard June '13. Confirmed by the front desk that there's no lounge for my upcoming stay on 6/19. I wonder if it's actually in construction? Disappointing it's not finished considering I'm only flying UA on an award and would typically never transit this airport.

If you will be there for breakfast, you are probably better off with the current situation if you are still a diamond. Last time I stayed there diamonds received a full breakfast in the restaurant. I would rather have a full breakfast than the lousy cont. spread they have in a lounge
