I'm thinking of getting an elgato eyeTV USB stick for my mac. As it comes with freview of Digital Terestial I'm wondering if this will work in countries outside UK (where I'm based).

Could I take my little stick to Sweden, or US or Canada and would it give me the countries respective freview channels?

It would just be a bonus if it did.

Same DTT standard is used in most of Europe, but not in the US or Canada.

When you first set up the device (I have a Mac G4 Powerbook running OS10.4) you are asked which country you are in. I assume this is changeable as part of the set-up program, but will check. The only difference will be frequencies though.

In short, never tried it myself, but should work.

I just searched through the elgato website. Apparently it will work anywhere in Europe. It will also work in US and canada as the software supports the standard there. the hardware doesnt but can be bypassed by using a VCR which filters the signal to one that the eyeTV can understand.

Or get two, one for each continent. It would just be so cool to record TV shows and things when over there and bring home.

Anyway - I think I'm off to get one.

If you're talking about the Hybrid which does DVB-T and analogue, you won't be able to use it on this side of the pond. It ONLY does PAL and SECAM... no NTSC. Our digistandard is ATSC so it won't do any good for broadcast digital here either (come to think of it, I've not seen a USB tuner that does it all for the Mac.) You'll need two devices at least. Expresscard solutions ARE coming, but it'll take time.

I think this is going to be something I will have to give a miss. As it turns out we have two freeview boxes in the house and non of them get a signal dispite the fact that we should have one.

So now I need to figure out if I can use this with cable as that is what we are most likely going to have installed very soon.

Back to the drawing board...

*sigh*
