Travel Technology - What am I doing wrong? Unlocked GSM Quad phone and United Mobile SIM card

I bought the phone on e-Bay and I got the card directly from UM.
I can call my house from the cellphone but for some reason I get busy signal when calling the other way, house to cellphone.
I'm located in US so I assume I need to dial the following:
011(international call)423(country code)663(area code)xxx-xxx(my phone number)
The card and phone are working as I can call from the cellphone but I just can't call the cellphone...
Is there something I'm missing?

First dial it without the 011, but use the + instead so:
+423663XXXXXXX
If that doesnt work then try:
You need to check that the number is set to forward, or in this case not forward.
Go to something like settings, or services, phone esettings etc. Then go to Get settings. The phone will go out to the network and get the settings, make sure it doesn't return call barring our forwad all calls etc. Also power the phone down and turn it back on.
Those two things should do it.

It looks like I have to call UM tomorrow. Their CSC is closed at the moment.
I tried all the suggestions and I still get a busy signal...
btw, how do you dial + from a US land based phone??? (I'm totally stupid when it comes to phones...... :D )

Hold down the "0" key until it shows "+" or push it several times quickly so it cycles around to "+".
It's not obvious.
You might also go get a Cingular pre-paid sim and get that working here in the US (I think you are still here?) before trying a foreign SIM. Plus you can get Cingular to "push" a config down to your phone if it is one they support.

This really depends on the phone. Entering a + works in different ways on different phones. The Samsung and Sony-Ericsson phones I currently carry both require you to hold down the 0 key to get a +.
Off-topic, I'm really annoyed by this really cheap Mobile World SIM I've picked up in the UK. All my numbers are saved in +<country code><number> format on my phones. The SIM requires I dial a 2 in front, e.g. "200" rather than "+". Very annoying (and no European roaming outside the UK.) I've got an Orange phone I'm borrowing from a friend at the moment, and my T-Mobile US SIM that I swap back and forth with the Mobile World SIM... (Which is worthwhile for the ridiculously cheap 5p/min calls to the US; quite cheap elsewhere too.) My Samsung phone has a bunch of numbers that I've manually modified to this format now; fortunately when I leave I can just wipe it and re-sync via Bluetooth to the standard + format.

*LOL* You don't, it's still 011. I'm thinking everyone missed the land-based part. Try doing a dialaround to make sure it's not your LD provider. E.G. 1010288011xxxxxxxxx.

I agree.
Can you make any international calls from your home landline phone?

I also don't know how to dial a +
I dialed 011-423 663 099 911 and got the United customer service
I have this SIM since 2005 .. when I called my cell phone, it worked.
Good luck.
This SIM didn't really help me enough ... almost nobody ever called me.
Now, when I am overseas, I forward my US land-line to my Skype-In phone number. I get the calls when on line or later with Skype's answering service... worked well for me.

thanks for all the help and suggestions.
Unfortunately I was busy today and didn't have a chance to call UM CS but I tried last night and it did go through from my land line, so it's not a problem with the land line.
I also e-mailed UM and I did receive a reply today but it was only to inform me that a case number has been assigned to my problem.
I will wait to see if I get any more info from them via e-mail and if not I will call them tomorrow.
Can't explain it. It works fine when I call my house from the cellphone but I still can't call the cellphone...
Anyway, I also use Skype and I do exactly what you do, but I just like to have a cellphone when I'm gone for a whole day and need to contact somebody for whatever reason.....

I think the OP said that they were having a problem CALLING the UM SIM? When calling the sim, from a home phone (get yourself a nice LD plan) the correct dialing protocol would still be the 011, 423, 662, XXX-XXX for calling the UM sim.
the "+" Is reserverd in my experience for calling FROM the SIM, phone or MENU BASED calling from the MOBILE device. I sometimes, depending on the network can call from just dialing from the keypad, +1, XXX,XXX,XXXX, but usually use the menu based dialing, and dial that way. The MESSAGE gets sent (this is what one is doing with menu based dialing) and then the inbound call is going to be ringing through to your number.
Get a call back provider, callbackworld.com is the best and cheapest for UM sims and LICH mobile numbers.

When dailing most international numbers from a USA landline, drop the zero that precedes the number.
For me to dial my Virgin UK number from home in the USA, I dial 011-44-77-nn-nn-nnnn.
But the actual number is 077-nn-nn-nnnn.
