This is getting to be joke......

Authorities at Long Beach Airport blew up a suspicious package found in a rental car, airport spokeswoman Sharon Diggs-Jackson said. The airport was closed for about two hours.

The suspicious carrying case was destroyed as a precaution by a bomb squad.

"You never know what's in there, and you don't want to risk anybody's safety," said Sgt. Paul Patterson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

That the police are suspicious of a package on 911 (hello?) or that the bomb squad does something the chicken way?

I can promise you that nobody puts on fire and blast proof clothing in the summer for "fun."

Maybe someone put a "joke" note on it to the TSA (you know, those <scorn>Fools</scorn>) on it? Maybe it tested positive for something? Maybe the ID for the rental car came back to an illegal alien using a stolen social security number? Maybe any number of things.

You think nobody is trying to kill you? On today of all days?

Dude, you're the final segment some Islamist needs to get EXP service to paradise.

I happily donned my leather jacket in the heat of the South Carolina summer when I took my motorcycle test. And I would be really happy to don fire and blast proof clothing in the summer to be able to experience blowing something up. Sometimes wearing uncomfortable attire is worth the excitement. There's also the issue of job security ("use it or lose it").

Maybe someone put a "joke" note on it to the TSA (you know, those <scorn>Fools</scorn>) on it?

When fake bombs injure someone, let me know.

Maybe it tested positive for something? Maybe the ID for the rental car came back to an illegal alien using a stolen social security number? Maybe any number of things.

Probably not or that would have been newsworthy.

You think nobody is trying to kill you? On today of all days?

I'm pretty sure no one is trying to kill me. Not even my trashy relatives (more bark than bite).

So, if you forget and leave something in the rental car you turn in at the airport things will be shut down and the bomb squad will be called to blow it up?

If you put two and two together a group of people can cause a lot of trouble for our air transportation system based on the reaction of the authorities such as what happened at LGB earlier today.

Could you imagine what would happen if people "forgot" and "left" things such as carrying cases and the like when turning in rental cars and in terminals at airports across the USA (especially major hubs) simultaneously? Does that spell "shutdown"? :p :p

The "joke" is that airport authorities have developed a history of detonating or using the water cannon on so-called suspicious objects that were really harmless. When it happens so often and there so many other options for clearing the bag (like, perhaps, asking the owner what's in it and correlating that to the x-ray image), it starts to seem like many of these incidents are in fact either for "fun" or to justify expensive bomb squads. What's even more disgusting is that they don't compensate the victims of this insanity for their losses, which can be pretty substantial when a laptop is involved (as is frequently the case).

For a while, this was going on on a fairly regular basis. I think it was SFO that was calling out the water cannon to use on suspicious bags a few times a month (often the suspicion was just that they were unattended), and other airports were blowing up laptops left and right. I think we may have even had a FTer lose his laptop this way (and get no apology and no compensation), though I can't find the link at the moment.

Edit:

Here is a link (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4991865#post4991865) to the FTer who had his laptop destroyed by TSA/FBI (part of a lengthy thread on the incident). Here is a followup (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5072840#post5072840) by the victim. Notice that TSA/FBI recognized that there was no bomb/detonator present but still refused to apologize or pay compensation. A clear example of government run amok.

Dude, you're the final segment some Islamist needs to get EXP service to paradise.

The only people going crazy, blowing things up at airports these days are non-Muslims.

It would be advisable that you learn what Islam is all about and how Muslims really live before using offensive terms and succumbing to this right wing, neo conservative wave of Muslim bashing designed to blame others for troubles that are solely of your making.

As far as I know, most of us expect that the rental car company would keep our things safe custody for some time when we forget them in a reantal car. One of my friends manages a rental car location. People leave all sorts of things including, cell phones and laptops. A few weeks ago, an FBI agent left something in the rental car. It was promptly returned to FBI.
