Looking for suggestions for Italian in Ann Arbor. I have never been to Ann Arbor before and have no idea what to expect. Thanks!

If you want something upscale either Gratzi or Palio would be nice, though both are somewhat pricey for what you get. Cottage Inn is always good, great pizza and reasonable prices. Those are the obvious choices away from the chains. I have not been to Paesano's in quite a while, but thought it was decent. Not sure if Bella Ciao is still in business, but I liked that too. All are downtown except for Paesano's, on Washtenaw near US-23.

Gratzi and Palio are actually part of a chain of sorts.

I think Italian food is best left to the Detroit area restaurants (rather than those in A2), but Paesano's is pretty good if you don't mind being outside the downtown environment.

Don't waste your time with Argiero's.

I thought that as I wrote it, but I think when chain Italian is mentioned most people probably think Olive Garden...

Thanks for all the suggestions. We ended up going to Palio and were pleased, went to Kilwins for ice cream. Overall a good trip to Ann Arbor. We did not go to the football game.

On your next trip to DTW, try Liparoto's right by the airport on the Meriman Road side in a strip mall. Very nice and the food was great. The owner was named Vito and if you can't find what you like on the menu, he will make it, if it isn't too busy. They make their own cannoellis (spelling not my strong point) and they were to die for.

I think you mean Leonardo's, no? ;)

You are right! The owners name was Liparoto. It's named after his father.

Belle Ciao --- 118 W. Liberty

It makes Olive Garden look like a fast food house.
