MilesBuzz! - "Relaxing" secutiry requirements, or just clueless?

Just came through security in Terminal 2 (Delta) at FLL. I've put up with a lot of "security" &*$# since 9/11 without a peep, but this morning provoked me - it seems that they are no longer checking ID at the security lines - just that you have your boarding card. When I inquired at the service counter inside security, the agent said, "Oh, we don't require that - they only check when you board the plane."

While I'm all for smoothing the way (and this extra check has been a waste of time, since there's a final check at the gate), it seems that they're making things up as they go along down here (I know, I know - BIG SURPRISE). To top it off, when I asked how long this had been the case, the agent said, "Oh, a couple of weeks." Well, I've flown through FLL every week for the last month, and no one's ever bothered to tell me not to bother with the ID fumble - whe I pointed this out to the agent, she just said, "Well, if you have it out, they'll look at it."

Whith all that, the question for the group is, are any other airports doing away with the ID check at seccurity? More interesting, are the other terminals in FLL still requiring the checks? Or is this just an example of making it up as they go along?

A lot of airports have dropped the ID check at security, because -- as you reported -- it is required by FAA regulation to be checked at boarding. And it was checked when you got your boarding pass, too.

Some airports continue to check IDs at security, but it is not required. They are just being stupid.

answer seems to be "it depends" on the airport and also, yes, on the individual checking.

Remember that the check at security is just to comply with the "only ticketed passengers in the secure area" rule. So it really only pertains to your ground access...you have to produce that ID to get on the plane. And the "only ticketed passengers" rule was primarily implemented to reduce the volume of people passing through security.

The first time I went thru security without ID being checked (at MSP in October) it kind of bothered me, but since then I haven't really noticed.

Personally I'd like to find a way to change or amend the current situation as I often would like to be able to meet colleagues who connect at ORD for a quick chat.

I've been one of the most vocal critics of the security in FLL, because before 9/11, it was an absolute joke. It's like, let's hire the oldest retirees from King's Point and put them in charge of securing our skies. Ridiculous.

Granted, I have nothing against old people. I just don't think they should be working secuity.

Anyhoo, on with the subject at hand. To be honest, I was getting a little sick of having to show my ID 38 times just to get on a plane. I mean, if they can check it at the gate, then what's the big deal?

They have stopped checking them at Dulles and in San Fran. It makes sense, too. If they're going to check them at the gate, and when you check in, what's the point?
