MilesBuzz! - Airlines honoring competitor Elite status?

I heard someone on a flight saying that they had faxed their Elite status information to other airlines, and were automatically given the equivalent status on the competitors. Has anyone heard of this?

This person said they were Elite on NWA, and faxed the info to UA and AA, and they got upgraded on those airlines as well.

Just wondering if this works or not.....

It does on UA, and can work on AA (sometimes they force you to do a challenege instead). It's once-in-a-lifetime, however, so what your friend did (two at the same time) is ridiculously stupid in most scenarios. And, by the way, FT has this lovely thing called a search function. Try "status match."

What a great, direct "hit" to the question poised by the OP! (Also of reference utility to me ;) ).
