Swiss International Airlines - Awart ticket seat selection question

Hi all,
I booked award tickets on Swiss using AA miles, for a trip in the middle of March. AA said that I could not select seats through them. I have heard it said that seats can not be pre-selected on Swiss, is that true? If not, how do I go about selecting them? Do I need status on LH or LX? Can I select any seat in my ticketed cabin?

Thanks for all the help:)

Hello,

non-elite-members cannot pre-select their seats with discounted eco-tickets on intra-European flights.
Intercontinental flights with award-tickets should be OK, but you should contact a SWISS-reservation-office for this.

as mentioned should be no problem on intercontinental flights, within europe you can put a seat request in your booking (aisle or window...) without exact seat number...

I have a related question. Will I be able to select seats if I book a ZRH-JFK flight under a UA number (operated by Swiss)? I often book my ticktets using Airmanager on the OS website, but it does not show seat maps for Swiss flights. I guess I will have to call Swiss help center, but I wonder if they can access seats if I book it as a UA flight.
Thanks.

I wouldn't book any non-UA metal flight at UA, as chances are that the operating airline (LX here) can't change the reservation and assign seats, while UA is famously incompetent in this regard, anyway.

General rule: If possible, always book flight numbers of the operating carrier. If that's impossible due to different ticketing rules, book the codeshare through a TA who's using the same GDS as the operating carrier. This will allow the operating carrier (LX) to access your booking and make changes.

There is also another general rule ;) : if you book a transatlantic flight operated by Swiss or Lufthansa under a UA number, the ticket may be even as much as $100 less expensive. It will be booked in the same class and with the same base fare. It just happens that for some reason UA adds less extra charges to the base fare.

The flight will be booked in Amadeus, which means I will be able to find the GDS of the operating carrier via checkmytrip.com (it will be impossible or difficult to check in online, though). My question was whether LX preassigns seats for their transatlantic flights. I could never access their seatmaps no matter where I tried to make dummy bookings. Is it always necessary to call them and ask to select them for me?
