I guess it had to happen: a letter from Citibank arrived today saying that the 5% rebate I've been receiving on my "Dividends" card for gas, groceries and pharmacy purchases will be scaled back to 2% on October 13 (they threw in a bone saying that cable and convenience store purchases will also now earn 2%, but so what?). I suppose this move was inevitable -- the card always seemed overly generous, especially since gasoline prices have almost tripled since the program was unveiled.
Prior to this, I had been a very loyal AMEX Starwood holder -- and I still use that card for everything EXCEPT gas, groceries and pharamacies. I guess I can go back to putting everything on that card again (except for the few places that don't accept AMEX). That said, I'd be happy to find a 5% replacement for Citibank. It does seem like there have been plenty of copycats. I know I've received several offers in the mail, but there's usually some catch that made them less desirable than Citibank -- usually that the full benefits expire in 6 months. Frankly, I'm not interested in switching back and forth (I only do that when folks offer me something like 25,000 free airline miles!). Is anybody current on the other offers, or have a suggestion for a replacement for the Citibank card? Thanks.
