They don't expire, but NW can terminate your account and forfeit all of your miles with no activity after three years. While they may not exercise this right, I think that the possibility of that expiration-like action taking place after three years should be noted.

Great idea--this sort of thing is long overdue.
I might add that as far as I know, AF/KLM Flying Blue's policy is that activity extends validity for another three years. Though, I'm not sure if that's just flight activity or any earning/spending.
Would be good if this could be confirmed by someone though.

In 2003, I used Worldperks miles that were earned in 1989 and 1990.
Well, that isn't entirely accurate. I earned some more when I flew on CO in 2001 - but even so, that was 11 years between earning new points.
The punchline is that NW didn't gobble my points.

BMI has no expiration rule, but a termination rule, though it seems that this rule is not enforced:
Members who have not recorded any activity with bmi, its diamond club partners, or made a redemption with the same parties and other promotional third parties, for a 12 month period, from the date of their last recorded activity on the diamond club database, shall be deemed dormant. If no claim is made on any residual Destination Miles on that member's account, membership may be terminated after a further 12 months and all remaining miles forfaited.
It translates into 2 years after the last activity, if it was enforced.

I just flew YYZ-LIM on CO. Looking back on my e-statements, it was my first flight deposited to OnePass in two years, yet my miles haven't been deleted. My dad's One Pass account has been inactive ever since Feb 2004 yet the miles are still there. I'm glad that CO isn't deleting miles, makes it more likely for me to fly them. How strictly are these timelines really enforced?
Not that anyone cares since they're bankrupt, but on RG (Varig) you can also extend your miles for a fee.

Reading the small print of Flying Blue I found out that they require an accrual of status (level) miles within 36 months, not only any activity like many others.
After a period of 36 months with no accrual of Level Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to cancel the Award Miles. It is up to the Member to check the expiration date of his Miles. After a period of 36 months of no accrual of Award Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to unilaterally terminate membership.

Credited Miles will be automatically converted to Redemption Units at a rate of 1 unit for 3.000 miles. Redemption Units will be valid for 10 years from the date of issue regardless of activity or membership level.
Not sure what happens to the remaining miles <3.000 after the converting is done but i guess that they will not expire.

CX Asiamiles: 3-4 years for each block of miles you've earn on that debiting year regardless to activity.
That's not quite right - your CX miles expire 3 months to the day of your last mileage activity, and any activity extends all existing miles by 3 years.
For example, if you rent a car on June 15th, 2006 and credit the miles to CX, your entire CX mileage balance will be valid until June 15th, 2009. If you then stay at a mileage-earning hotel on July 15th, 2006, your entire balance will be extended until July 15th, 2009, and so on.

Where do you get this information? It seems to be directly contradicted by the AsiaMiles member guide page 8 and also T&Cs section 8.1 and 8.4 (on page 13):
(Sorry, I can't figure out how to copy and paste from that PDF. I just get gobblygook characters when I do.)
Basically, 8.1 says 3 years, and 8.4 says you have to pay (half the cost of buying them!) to extend them. Same deal on page 8. No other method of extension mentioned (whereas other programs like AA and BA where partner activity extends, clearly state that in their member guides and T&Cs).
FWIW, this member guide looks to have been updated just a month ago (1 Mar 07 is the date on the front), so is it possible this is a recent change?
which is just one of several threads in the CX section of FT where everyone there confirms that there is no way to keep AsiaMiles from expiring other than by paying through the nose to extend them.

How long are Qmiles valid for?
All Qmiles earned are valid for a period of five calendar years. After this period, miles earned but not used will be deleted from the Member's account on December 31of the fifth year. Expired Qmiles cannot be refunded. Privilege Club reserves its rights to change the mileage expiration policy without prior notice.

Having just called LH M&M in Santa Clarita yesterday, I got this info...
* LH miles expire at the end of the 12th quarter after they were earned.
Miles earned in Feb 05 would then be on 3/31/08 deathwatch... etc
* Status accounts (HON, SEN, FTL) .......... miles do not expire as long as status is maintained. If status is lost, the effect is as if the miles were re-issued on the date that you become a sheep. Three years later, at the end of the quarter...
* If ANY member maintains the LH credit card, the expiration date is not re-set, but rather "cloaked", and the expiration date ignored. Should the member give up the card, any miles over 3 yrs old would expire at the end of the quarter.
The part about any member makes sense, as Status members wouldn't need a CC to keep their miles...

From 1 April 2009, for Ivory members, the validity period for all Award Miles will be reduced from 36 months to 20 months. To prolong the validity of your Award Miles for a further 20 months, simply take an eligible flight with AIR FRANCE, KLM, Air Europa, Kenya Airways, Aircalin or any SkyTeam partner.
For Elite members: From 1 April 2009, if you have Silver, Gold, or Platinum
membership, your Flying Blue Elite status will protect your Award Miles from expiring, as long as you keep your Elite level.
Although not confirmed yet, this means as Non-elite you have to earn a levelmile every 20 months at least (same as before, only 36 months will change to 20 months).
As Elite not much change, unless you loose elite-status. For Platinum-for-life-members this can be a change for the good: no expiratation at all.

Anyone looking at Virgin America - it looks like points there expire after 18 months from the original date credited. So you effectively can't extend the expiration of any set of points - you have to use them within 18 months.
I've already made my mistake and flown Virgin, but I won't do it again unless the price is lower than the competition by enough to compensate for effectively not getting any miles.
