The first Hilton-branded hotel to be built in Atlanta in 31 years will begin construction next fall. The 48-story Hilton, on Peachtree Street, will feature 300 hotel rooms topped by 192 condo units.

Set to open by 2009 the hotel has two developers. Sandcastle Resorts & Hotels will handle the hotel portion of the project, and Wood Partners will develop the condos. The hotel will feature 10-foot ceilings in the guestrooms, a 6-story stone façade and a luxury restaurant and spa, according to Sandcastle.

The project was made possible by the expiration of the 30-year exclusivity arrangement that banned any Hilton hotel from opening within a 10-mile radius of the Hilton Atlanta Hotel & Towers in Downtown Atlanta. In June, a 242-room Hilton Garden Inn was the first Hilton hotel project announced after the ban was lifted, and the brand is expected to expand throughout Atlanta in the near future.

The Peachtree Street Hilton will join the InterContinental Buckhead, which opened in 2004, and the yet-to-open St. Regis Hotel as high-end hotels in the area.

That's good news. Stayed at the Downtown Hilton last Oct. for a conference. The worst! Service and conditons very poor.
