"Sir/maam, do you have a Skypass membership number with Korean Air?"
"No, I don't."
"Oh ok, well, do you have an mileage account with any of the SkyTeam carriers listed on that wall behind me?"
"Oh, no I don't.."
"Well, its a lot of miles to Seoul so if you want, I can credit it to a new account if you fill out that application in front of you. You most deifnitely don't wanna miss on it. :)"
"Um, yeah, but I think I'll just skip that, I don't really care."
     :( :( :(
This happens about 40 percent of the pax I check in.

Let them pass up on it. It's better for us. Imagine how difficult it would be to redeem miles if EVERYONE belonged to the FF programs.

Is it possible to enter your FF #? I'm not sure that would be ethical but I'm curious if that would be possible.

Not unless you have an identical name. For Auracon, since he works for the airline, it would probably be grounds for termination since it's like stealing from your employer.
This lament over people that don't care about miles has been discussed in other threads. If I hated to travel, miles for travel awards would not be appealing to me either.

Not necessarily, the systems allow for forced membership number entry to accomodate situations like last name change due to marriage and etc, so I could technically just force my number in anyone's uncredited itinerary.
But yeah, this would be grounds for termination. :D

Yes, but what if you spreaded the joy and forced a bunch of ours. :)

There was an article about something like this that happened in Australia and was caught last year, but I can't seem to locate it.

Ill take the ticket # so I can credit it to my SkyBonus Account! Anyone's ticket works there. pass them on to me!

The way I explain it to people is "The miles you would earn from Chicago to Seoul and back is more than half the miles you need toward a free ticket within the US." It helps to put it in perspective. Often that is enough motivation.
At least you are trying to help and that is appreciated.
On the other hand, the fewer people with miles, the better. It is getting harder and harder to find award seats.

Exactly! :D
At the sub shop today, I turned down the offer of a punch card. I wonder if the folks on SandwichTalk think I'm stupid or nuts.

What they really need to do is to give passengers a bonus if they sign someone else up to the program. Once the new member takes a flight, the person who coaxed them to join gets a reward. I think they'd get more people signed up that way. Of course, I am with XStAnt that fewer FFer's make it easier for the rest of us! ;)

I have a Borders Cafe card with nine of ten holes punched. Was in there last week, and was told they've discontinued the program, replaced it with "Borders Rewards", but my old miles, er punches, won't be credited. Arrrrrggg!
I should have escalated to a higher customer service agent.

I'm not familiar with the specifics of that particular program, but I imagine that most people take international flights no more than once every year or two. So even if a certain flight is more than half the amount needed for an award, it's still useless for many.
For example, if I fly SFO-HKG on UA and get 14,000 miles, I'll still have no use for them because I fly LCCs like WN, B6, and ATA domestically.

While I think in general it's silly to allow potential miles to go uncredited, I wouldn't bother if I'm flying outside my own airline/alliance of choice. For example, earlier this year, I flew LHR-RAK on BA, but didn't bother signing up for the FFP; I didn't think the 2800 or so miles would have been any use.
On the other hand, I have a good friend who flies a lot on DL, and has never bothered to sign up for an account with them. He even just flew a long haul on DL (NRT-ATL) and plans on doing it again later this year. I'm really hoping the many stories I tell about the perks I've gotten as an elite (on UA) will entice him to finally sign up for a frequent flyer account. :p
