California - Pre book hotels in September , or just turn up?

I'm flying to LAX in Sept and driving up to Vancouver over three weeks. Should I pre-book hotels on the way, or should I just turn up each night where I think looks good? I have the route pretty well planned. (also taking a Yup to Florida and staying two days in Orlando near the beginning). Cost is important particularly as Mrs DocH and I prefer better quality hotels.

It's generally pretty dangerous to just drive up the coast highway and actually find a hotel that you would like to stay in every night. I have landed in several motel 6's, et al working the same game. You might have luck, but if not, it can be pretty annoying driving around for an hour looking for someplace to sleep.
