Old Street is on the Northern Line, which almost always requires a transfer to get to more central parts of London and associated tourist attractions.
Aside from the location, this is a fantastic price for a hotel (with complimentary Wireless internet!)! ^

Nah!
Old Street is a pretty good location - you need to transfer from almost anywhere in London. And Liverpool Street station (central line) isn't too far. I'd even recommend Hoxton over Earls Court for any tourists I'm actually friends with.
You can get the 55 bus to Tottenham Court Road/Holborn (British Museum) and be there within 20 minutes.
Some great places to eat in the area and a buzzing nightlife on your doorstep...

Just tried..
The specific search function for the 1 GBP rooms appeared to be working, but after submitting information and agreeing to the terms and conditions I got this response:
CONNECTION STATUS: Unable to submit reservation
Invalid_RateType

I tried calling the reservations contact number on the website, but it's engaged. (Probably with others trying to call them about the same thing.)
Sigh. Oh well, I'm off to bed now. Will try again before work, though it will probably be too late then (assuming they get it working properly at all, and it isn't a case of "bait and switch").

has a link to the non-Flash booking engine. It works (though I haven't received the confirmation email yet).

But you know that the area isn't any less noisy than Earls Court. :)
