I am interested in knowing how many airline miles you currently have in your various frequent flyer accounts.
These are my current balances:
bmi 175,000
Starwood* 150,000
American 100,000
Continental 90,000
British Airways 90,000
Delta 10,000
United 10,000
Total 625,000
* I adjusted my actual 120,000 SPG balance upwards by 25% to reflect it's equivalent airline miles value.
In most years this balance grows by 100,000 miles reflecting earnings of 400,000 miles and redemptions of 300,000 miles.

Well I had a lot more last year but gave each of my kids and grandkids a free trip. I now have:
American: 102,000
US Air/AW 126,000
United 47,000
Delta 154,750
British 25,100
Starwood 110,000 (without considering additional value)
Total: 564,000

Not that many, I burn them as fast as I earn them. I have given a trip to Hawaii to my parents for the past 4 years, plus gone 2x per year myself.
Right now I have the following
CO - 600 (I just redeemed 2 55k point rewards)
DL - 100k (I would use them if I could  )
AA - 16k
Hyatt - 250k
Hilton - 80k
UA - 7k - I stopped accumulating this one and am going to get a AQ interisland ticket with the balance.

I had over 3 million DL miles a couple years ago.
I’m somewhere around 1 million +/- today due to mucho Business Class tickets to Europe and also a secret accrual fund I’ve set up for Dovster.
Since I know he doesn’t read MilesBuzz, I feel comfortable in sharing this with you all.
Once the war in Israel/Lebanon is over, I know he’ll want to follow-up on all the marriage proposals he’s received lately.
I’ve got a surprise for him. :)

I was up over 110K on AA at the beginning of the year but I burned 40K on a UK ticket (probably not the best bang for the miles) in Feb. and 35K on a Hawaii ticket for this coming December (a great bang for the miles  ). So right now, right after taking a Chicago hop, I am at 41+K on AA. I am thinking of burning that on a Spain ticket for next April-ish, guess I should decide soon! Also have 13+K on CO, mostly by flying NW for work...someday I will have enough for it to be useful... :)

Hi folks,
I'm new to this chat room having been directed from an article in the NYTimes. I've accumulated the following mile rewards:
Continental - 22,000, also $130 credit for future flight
Delta - 56,000
The majority of reward points were amassed by personal travel and I have recently joined in credit card and shopper programs to increase reward points.
I have several issues regarding utilizing flight miles. The Delta reward plan has increased the miles for a one-way from 25,000 to 50,000; there never seems to be a 'select' flight that is convenient and I can use less miles. My plan is to have sufficient reward mileage for a trip to California, in 2007.
Is a barter program available where I can trade miles with another person? Continental sells miles $32 per thousand but I do not want to do that. I'm not aware of a purchase plan thru Delta.
Since Delta and Continental have similar routes for my location - northern NJ, I would consider consolidating the mileage from both airlines to one account.
Thanks for your reply.

Welcome to FT, Alles.
See the thread "Consolidating Miles" in this forum (Miles Buzz). There are also LOTS of ways to earn the extra miles you need (see S.P.A.M.). Delta also allows you to purchase miles, but you shouldn't need to. You should be able to get the points you need by '07. Good luck making it to California.
And, since I'm posting here, my miles are currently:
AA 20,000
DL 65,000
I burn miles as soon as they accumulate. If the balance gets large, I start looking for where the miles will get me (rather than waiting for a ticket to somewhere I need to go). It's been a great adventure!

I have a total of about 200,000 airline miles. I try to burn 'em for int'l biusiness seats when I can, so I never get more than 400k total.
I think my Hilton HHonors balance is at 100,000 -- those I save up and use for 6 nights at a Category 6 when I hit 175k, but I'm thinking that this time I may wait until I'm at 240k and take the African Safari award. :D
I should say that I would definitely not have nearly as many points and miles or been able to earn and use all that I have without FlyerTalk. Thanks everyone!

Other programs: I have orphaned miles in several other programs. But not enough to do me any good. Most annoying - the 15K in NW that I moved into there several years ago, with plans to move them on thru to something else (Hilton, I think). Turns out, they can't be transferred out.

With the epidemic of cancer and heart disease that we are experiencing in America, even getting to reitirement is a great victory, with or without a huge hoard of miles. Of course, if we are lucky enough not to crash, and avoid the big "C", the hoards of miles, health, and wealth that we accumulate along the way, make retirement just all that much sweeter. ^

Punkster, mayhaps you will retire before I, mayhaps not. Never bet against my indolence.
You do have me at an advantage; you and Hunk are both earners, while I alone have to support the greedy travel habits of a family of four (although Mrs. J. did inadvertently get in one Idine this year because I registered her credit cards). I cashed in nearly 3/4 a million in '06, and only kept it under a million because we stayed with various family members the entire 2 1/2 weeks we were in Oz.
That said, I tend to agree with you that one's balance should be considered as retirement assets. But, if, and only if, it does not require denying any trips when still employed....Let's face it, none of us know how long we (or the various airlines/hotel chains) have left on this earth.

Awards, like most anything else, are subject to inflation. But I suspect that having the freedom that comes with retirement could allow one to maximize their pot of miles/points my taking advantage of specials and/or non-peak travel. I’ll let you know when I get to the other side.
That said, I would never put off a sure trip now for a possible trip, or two, in the future.

This is true.
Additionally, our son, Peregrine has also become a serious mileage earner. We have passed the "frequent travel for set-up and dismantel" baton on to him and other staff members.
While Hunki and I dropped AS when upgrading became impossible, our son, will attain top staus with them this year. Maybe we can guilt him into giving us his upgrades. ;)

BA - 385,000 (spent more than 200,000 in the last year for honeymoon + trips due to family emergencies; now I'm trying to save them for MFUPs and for some premium long-haul travel)
AC - 60,000 (spent about 175,000 in the last year to visit family, have them visit us or send them to visit each other)
Flying Blue - 35,000 (amazingly, we've spent enough on the Amex to acquire enough level miles for FB Silver, without ever having stepped on an AF plane)
Miles&Smiles (Turkish Airlines) - 25,000 (not sure how I'm ever going to manage to spend these)
Virgin - about 30,000
I miss my old job, where I used to accumulate about 200,000 BA miles per year, plus another 100,000 or so on AC. Either I need to find a new job, or Mr. Canuck has to become a consultant again.

I feel so sorry for people who are "saving" their miles for retirement without understanding that the value goes down every year or so.
I would be willing to bet you a subscription to Inside Flyer that in 10 years, the price of tickets will go up more than the mileage requirement for tickets, making the value of today's miles higher than they are now.

Dream on. Within the next 3 years, I predict a 50% devaluation of most airline miles by the elimination of all saver awards (25K mile domestic awards) leaving only standard awards (50L miles domestic awards) remaining.

573k on NWA but I have used 300k so far this year.
73k on UA (have not flown on UA metal in over 2 years)
I should accumulate 200k more on NWA before the end of the year based on current plans.
I only fly a few segments per year outside of Skyteam so my other balances are all fairly small.

Delta - 1,376,428 (flown is about 500,000 the rest is bonuses) : I never have a chance to really cash them in except a few short flights and have stopped flying Delta. I have in the past two montsh beeing trying to get flights for family members, but whenever I call, no matter what the routing, with flexibility of +/-14 days I can never seen to get a damn flight ! The miles seem almost worthless with Delta. I tried to use them to upgrade on a flight t o Gatwick and the damn upgrade was not available (and I still have 13 upgrae vouchers on my desk which expire at some point....but DL said no seats were availablle for those either and I had flexibility of looking at 9 possible flight combinations). I donated a bunch of miles last year. I'd rather donate them than have them just sit there
United : 178,991 : Switched from UA (and DL) to US recently so no more UA miles, I'll use them later this year for my father-in-law)
US: 78,678 : Will pick up 4,000 or so miles today flying home from Heathrow, not including whatever the bonus is.

I don't know how anybody else gets them but, between Hunki and I, we accumulate about 500,000 miles per year by flying, and the rest we get from hotels stays or spending money.
I have never really figured out how many hotel points we get each year from staying, and how many we get from spending. I do know that we seem to get Hilton points a lot faster than we get Starwood points, despite the fact that wespend a lot more money on our SPG AMEX card than we do on our Hilton AMEX card.
The game is good, and a whole lot of fun! ^

While I do have a job that involves travel, it's travel in a tractor trailer. ;) I kind of wish my trucking company gave me a FF mile for every mile I drove, I'd be getting 125k per year just from work.
My Jal miles comes from vacation travel but my Continental miles comes from my bank issued debit card. While there are plenty of credit cards that offer miles, I don't do anything on credit. But to each his own. :)

Wow you guys and gals have lots of miles. I really would love to have a job that involves travel, just for one year so I can get it out of my system.
You can get miles by other means. My wife's points are all by flying, primarily on AA or CO. We use her points to upgrade her to FC whenever she has a long flight and doesn't get an elite upgrade.
All of my points have been amassed by non-flying, either via credit cards, purchasing of miles, using airlines shopping links, or things like electric utility programs where you get 2 points per $$ spent each month if you charge your bill. I became very involved back before the dot-com bubble burst and took advantage of every opportunity to earn miles, especially NWA's bonus programs. Another fun way was when we could purchase US savings bonds with credit cards, or join a brokerage firm or bank.
If you do enough research on Flyertalk, you'll find easy ways to get miles. Before 9/11, it was almost like an addiction

miles? me? now?...
well i dunno, maybe 120k on AA and close to that on a couple other airllines, plus the fact i help manage the accounts for family members so we know when to best use what...
I tend to use the miles as I go and am vastly different from some business traveling friends of mine who use them for upgrades or collect too many to even have time to uyse them all up. In my circle of friends, sadly, many of these people never have ample vacation time to go/use them all up anyway. I don't currently travel for work but am happy to hear the business traveler can still benefit from mileage things into today's overly restrictive flying and marketing world. I tend to hunt and gather, use em up and then go get more. I don't have 100% faith the whole gig is stable enough to put all my eggs into baskets for too long. But I'm not horribly worried--just cautious.
I'm also different than many non FT savvy types all of us have run into who like to boast their numerous mileage like flashing gold, as if to impress someone in the same way the fat mafioso guy in the big cadilac would wanna show off to some trashy NJ street girls in a mob movie set in the late 1970s or something.
