I need to attempt to fix a problem with a laptop that won't boot ("unmountable boot volume") by booting off a CD and getting into the recovery console.

The problem is that I don't have any Windows XP discs available. I've done some searching and I can find is the software to create a set of six floppy disks to boot off of. This is no good because I don't have a floppy drive on the machine.

Any way to create / download a bootable CD?

If you have another Windows machine, you can build a standalone bootable CD with BARTPE:

Otherwise, try booting a linux live CD like knoppix. You can then use tools like fdisk and parted to try to fix things.

As long as you have a license, you can generally purchase the media for less than $20 from any Microsoft reseller. there are different versions of XP, though, and most resellers will only have the corporate edition media for sale which may or may not work on your laptop depending on what version was insatlled.
