Is there any cheap or freebie software that would allow the conversion of WMV movie files to a format that a Palm OS can play?

Try TV Harmony. They have some tools for file conversion. You'll still need a player. Try TCPMP, which is currently free.

Switch? (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Convertors/Switch.shtml)

Edit to say, oops, not WMV, but Switch is a great format converter other than that.

Edit further to say: How about this (http://www.softslist.com/download-1-3-36365.html)? Haven't tried it myself.

I have not done it for Palm OS. Try Photo Story 3. It is free for download for licensed user of Windows XP. Try to import the WMV file to PS3, then output it to your Palm. Not too sure if it works. At the output stage, it has options, try the one for cell phone. Good luck

Does the free tcpmp (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about) software play WMV files? I have not found any video that it can not play although I do not have many WMV movies. I know the tcpmp forum also has links to many freeware convert software.

I know that a new version (now called coreplayer) will be released any day. It should have support for all codecs and also offer streaming video. I know v1.0 will be released in summer and v1.5 released later with more features so the streaming option may not be available until 1.5.

Yes, but no audio.
