American Express Membership Rewards - Cheers for MR

I just had a great MR experience. I have been trying to get an upgrade to JNB for Novemeber from PHL. I am a loyol UA flyer and had been trying all sorts of connections with them and transfering miles via MR. No luck.

Then today, I noticed I could get a Business Class ticket for 120,000 on DL using AF. Called up DL and got it immediately. But the greatest thing was that I had these old 16,000 DL miles and simply transferred another 104,000 miles and presto---I had my ticket.

The MR transfer went great and the DL agent was simply fantastic. I have been thinking of switching my AMEX CARD because I can't use MR for UA. However, this was an eye opening expereince---working the different airline partner relationships was good and MR gave me the flexibility to do that. I guess with both DL and CO as a part of the MR program, I have a lot of other carriers who I can draw upon. I have to admit that I miss the AA and UA connection though.

Anyhow, just wanted to share the good news.

Bear in mind you can do the same to fly UA by redeeming through Aeroplan or ANA, and to fly AA by redeeming through Mexicana. It's not as flexible as being able to transfer points directly to AA or UA (i.e. to combine with other miles or use for an upgrade), but nonetheless Membership Rewards points can be used for travel on all three airline alliances.

I tried to access the aeroplan site, but I found it wholefully unhelpful--in fact, it didn't list Johanesburg as a possible rewards site. I will check out ANA. Thanks.
