Budget dorm in central Shanghai that is quiet, cheap and full of perks
best budget accomodation (hostel/dormitory/Chinese alternative) in Shanghai that has excellent location close to Subway and is in a relatively central part of town (thought the latter isn't crucial). Also is cheap enough to stay for days on end (50RMB or less) and the most important part, is void of heavy backpacker traffic.
By this, I mean a dorm that is not overun with travellers causing noise, keeping the lights on, hogging the bathroom, etc...
Right now, I'm staying in a dorm in a Chinese IYH (not catering to backpackers exclusivley) in Chaoyong district of Beijing (Sunny Youth hostel) it's called. For 60RMB/night, I have a whole dorm to myself (with not a peep from anyone) on my floor, full 24hour internet access in my room (cable plugin) and free laundry and kitchen facilities to make food.
The place has no foreigners (only myself) and the odd couple (but they never go for the dorms).
Long story short, is there something similar in Shanghai you guys know a bit about that falls under any of the above criteria?

i quite liked Captain Hostel on the Bund (www.hihostels.com)...
don't think you would get your own dorm for 60RMB.. but it is clean, 5 mins walk to the subway, nearby shops
private if you want to know more...

I stayed at the Captain Hostel last year and it was absolutely PACKED. There were people sitting outside who hadn't made reservations, hoping something would turn up after being sent away. Dorms were okay, a little noisy, bathrooms were decent, nothing to really write home about. The hostel bar/restaurant had a great view on the roof, but was quite expensive. I remember the dormmates being weird... I would have looked for a different room or hostel if I was staying longer just because the people in the room were awful.

I was just in Shanghai in March, and I like the Hiker Youth Hostel. Nice place downstairs with friendly people, lots of couches & a bar/restaurant(very overpriced food)/pool table. Captain Hostel also looked nice, although I never went in the evenings to see what the nightlife was like. Captain Hostel is more convenient to the Bund, but the Hiker Youth Hostel is more convenient to one of the big shopping streets (forgot the name).
Here's what I wrote in an e-mail to my brother & sister:
--------------
First hostel I've been in with computerized room locks.
Can you believe the card key has a deposit (100Y - $12) which is double
the room cost (45Y - $5.50)?
Hiker Youth Hostel address is #450 Middle Jiangxi Rd

Cost me 16Y ($2) from the airport.
- Bus #3 to Long Yang Rd (12Y) - the first bus stop is next to the
MagLev station (50Y?)
- The walk from the Bus to the Metro was a little confusing in the
rain (no signs), but I just followed people.
- Metro to Middle Henan Rd (4Y) - just west of Bund
- 10 min walk NE of Middle Henan Rd Metro stop
Pros:
- People seem very friendly. Feels very safe.
- Beds have solid wooden frames
- Free Internet (3 terminals) & wireless (My Mac connects great. POPs
ok. Yahoo SMTP is dicey.)
- Small lockers with keys
- Great common room area with lots of couches, bar, free (small) pool
table
Cons:
- Bedrooms are small (not as small as Paris)
- Long hike (10 min) to Metro

Have you considered the Pujiang? I haven't stayed there in over 10 years, but it was a staple back in the day.
