We are heading over to see family in Northern Ireland. The Wifi hotspots are sketchy and not very convienient. Does anyone know if you can rent an access card from Vadofone or someone else like you can a cell phone? I am talking about the laptp card for wireless internet like Verizon/T-mobile ect have. There looks to be great coverage but you need the card.

Have you checked out BTopenzone? www.btopenzone.com.

To be honets, you're probably better off nicking it from one of your family's neighbors. Or do they have broadband already?

The problem is we're staying in Hillsborough with an elderly relative. It's a retirement apartment and no high speed in the apartment. We might get lucky and someone will have an unsecured wireless signal floating about.

No hotspot near the place. We can always take the laptop out someplace and get a hotspot. I was looking for something while in residence. Dial-up is marginally ok for e-mail but not much good for anything else these days.

Since this is Europe you'll have a pretty decent chance of getting some form of 3G wireless, check with the mobile operators in that area, you don't always need a card, many cellphones allow themselves to be tethered.

I understood "Since this is Europe" everything else lost me :)

I know that there is good wireless coverage using a card (like the one we have with Verizon here in the States) but upgrading to an international card and plan are very expensive for our needs.

I guess we'll just turn on the laptop and see what is available. There is always dial-up for basic e-mail <big sigh>.

Many prepaid services in Europe will also allow your phone to be used to access the Internet, you may want to check with the various operators (three, O2, T-mobile, Vodafone, Virgin and Orange) to see which prepaid plans they have that has a mobile internet option. Be sure to check if it is "real" internet, and not just mobile pages on the phone.

We found O2 to be pretty widely common in N.I.

Ok, you are talking about using the phone for internet and not a laptop. Not really interested in that. More wanting to be able to access work related sites and large e-mail files while away.

I guess a trip to a hotspot and access at the Conrad in Dublin will have to suffice.

Thanks All :)

No; I do mean using the phone and a data cable to access the internet.
