hi
i'm currently waitlisted on a LAX-HKG flight for Aug 6, 7, and 8, for one passenger. i have been waitlisted since around the end of june. i'm an asia miles member, and i'm told that i'm on the priority waitlist. i've explained to asia miles that i absolutely have to be in hong kong because of a family emergency. it's now roughly a week and a half before i'm suppose to call and confirm my ticket (which i don't have since i'm only on the waitlist) can anyone tell me what my chances of getting a ticket is? what can i do?
any info would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

There are 3 CX flights a day from LAX to HKG.
On expertflyer, I see loads of availability on all classes and on all fare classes, even Y; and that is just for Aug 6. The seat maps also show loads of unallocated seats in Y. C is busy but is not full. F is empty.
Are you on some special discounted ticket?
Alternatively, are you using a travel agent who may have access to limited seat availability rather than CX direct themselves.

If it's a "family emergency" as you say, why do you not have a confirmed ticket (i.e. bought one)?

Well, if it is emergency thing, you can always buy the ticket on-line without waitlist. (The avail on that day is widely open, right? You dont have to buy Y class)

I just got a $1313.04 USD (leave Aug 5 for a week stay) on cathay-usa.com - not cheap but it is Summer. And you'll earn miles you can use another time.
Best price via Yahoo travel was $1426 in China Airlines.

"Priority waitlist" for Asia Miles member... is that a published benefit or something? Even if you are on the waitlist, you have all those MP elites ahead of you, so it's not that "priority". Anyways, trying routing yourself through Tokyo or Osaka (via AA), and then continuing onto HK through CX.. availbilities may be available there.

i would buy the ticket, since i truly do have a family emergency to attend to. it's just that i just graduated from college, and i don't start working till september. i can't afford a ticket.
in any case, it's almost the end of july, and i still have no news from asia miles. just getting really anxious.
thanks for everyone's help and input.

I guess your primary question is "when does CX release additional seats for awards?" and in my experience it varies between 2 and 1 weeks before the travel date. So you probably wouldn't know before August 1. Sometimes seats are released up to the day of the flight, however CX often is overbooked in Y trans-Pacific -- look at all the stories about frequent op-ups. So I suspect they are more likely to sell a cheap ticket to a consolidator than to release a ticket for award use, unless the requester has MPC status.
The waitlist helps you to get an award seat that someone else had booked and then cancels now ... those are the only seats that you'll get prior to 2 weeks before the flight. In theory (and evidence suggests in practice) you will get such cancelled seats in preference to someone making a new request on Oneworld (not Asiamiles).

Looks like CX released inventory at the 2 week mark.
