Qantas Frequent Flyer - Qantas & International Excess Baggage ex SYD
Hi,
Wondering if anyone can share their personal experiences here on international excess baggage charges by Qantas staff ex-SYD.
How much have you been charged?
at what amount did they levy the charge? 25kg? 20kg?
Did they charge you on the exact KG amount?
Did they charge you a flat fee? a per kg fee?
was the per kg charge the rack rate or did they do it lower? ie $10kg.
Did they send you to Qantas Freight, rather than ship it?
If you have no status, what circumstances did you have?

Presumably it will vary depending on destination - US flights (and RTW tickets) have piece allowance and asia/europe/nz have weight allowance.
The current QF excess baggage charges are shown here (http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/beforeYouTravel/baggageAddCollection) and the current QF checked baggage allowance (http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/beforeYouTravel/baggageChecked).

There are a lot of anecdotes which span the full range of possible outcomes from excess baggage being allowed free in large amounts (up to 100% over allowance) to having to pay when only 10% over. I've noticed that most airlines have tightened up on excess baggage, and some have computer enforcement (the agent cannot accept the bag until they certify that it is an exception, or the money has been collected -- I don't know if QF is doing this now). The one firm limit are the maximum size and weight per piece limits -- exceed those and it goes as air freight and not as accompanied baggage. The agents have zero leeway on this (due to some airports refusing to unload oversize/weight pieces).
It is a lot rougher than a year or 2 ago, unfortunately.
Any idea what QF charge per kg on excess baggage?
