Does anyone have any favorite guesthouse/moderate hotel recommendations for Saigon, Siem Reap and Bangkok? $25 ballpark. Best areas of town to stay?

In Bangkok, I recommend the New Siam Guesthouse II (http://www.newsiam.net/ns/newsiam2.php?PHPSESSID=77de350a80eeed7e05c3420c634 c6716). I've stayed there twice. It's in the Khao San Road area, but far enough away to allow for peaceful sleep. It's just a few years old and costs something like 20 USD per night. It has the added bonus of having a nice little pool... Bangkok can be very mushi atsui!

The New Siam II looks great. I stayed in the West Banglamphu area back in the day, at the Chusri GH. Close to the pier and close enough to Khao San, without being fully in the mix. Thanks for the recommendation! We will definitely take a look at it.

Hey, Brian. Yup, 12 days over Thanksgiving. Hoping to see some lower UA fares before pulling the trigger.

These aren't really hostels, but cheap accomodations, usually with breakfast included, can be found on asiahotels.com

My friend I and enjoyed the Penguin House (http://www.geocities.com/penguinhouses/index.html) in the Sathorn district, not far from the Pinnacle and Malaysia hotels. Our large room even had its own desktop computer and free internet access. Per night we paid 900 baht cash.

As for Siem Reap, I've heard good things about Peace of Angkor Villa (http://www.peaceofangkor.com/).

For Siem Reap I would recommend the Golden Temple Villa. I stayed there back in April and had a great time. It's location is about 5 minutes off the main road but the rooms are clean, there is a decent (cheap) restaurant, and they offer free internet access. Just a note in general about Siem Reap - I found that you had to be really forceful when telling your motorcycle/taxi driver where to go in order to avoid going to places where they will collect comissions. Prices for food and lodging were also considerably higher than what you'd pay in less touristy areas.

In Siem Reap, stay at Earthwalkers Guest House. It's newly constructed, has A/C in-room, and is run by a group of young Europeans (Norwegians?). It's cheap at about $13-15 per night and any proceeds go to local charities. Includes a simple breakfast (bread, jam, butter, coffee/tea). It's a bit away from downtown (Old Market), but after a long day hiking though the temples or the markets, it's nice to get away from the downtown area a little ways. They also pick you up from the airport for free (let them know ahead of time) and can arrange taxi vans or tuk tuks for you since the hostel is a bit out of the way. Beware of the entry fee/departure fees. Each will cost you more than a night's stay at the hostel! ($25 entry, $25 departure)

I just got back a month ago from a trip in this area, except ours was a bit more extensive (Singapore, Siem Reap, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Hong Kong). Enjoy it!
