Taipa is the island across from the main Macau Peninsula. The website says it's 5 minutes BY CAR to the Macau airport, and 8 minutes to the Ferry Pier (for ferries to Hong Kong). However, I think that "8 minute" number may be a little optimistic.
Anyways, you can take taxis or buses to the main part of Macau, or they have a shuttle to the ferry pier. It's just not the most convenient place to visit Macau, in my opinion.

First of all the rates for the two days are different. Sunday is considered as a weekday, Saturday is much more expensive. A decent hotel at a good price ina convenient location is the Kingsway Hotel. You may get the sunday at around 400-500 HK$ from a local travelagent. Saturday will be at least 50% more (up to double). Try to avoid the Holiday Inn and the Grandeur at any cost. Also the Hyatt is not really good and far away (Taipa).

If one's traveling from Hong Kong, then just wait until you get to the ferry terminal in HK to book your hotel for the night. Lots of agents, very good prices. And while July 1st is a holiday, it's not a major major one for traveling, so you may still be okay.

Is it wise to do this on a weekend with the influx of gamblers?
Not knowing the hotels these agents represent, I might be a bit leary, any other hotels besides those mentioned in this thread to either stay in or stay away from?
