This is going to be a very l--o--n--g trip report including many destinations, airlines, hotels. I am going to leave out a lot of the details because, effectively, it would be a novel. This is not yet complete - I have a few more legs and destinations to include and will do that later.

APRIL 2006
SFO-HKG-SIN-BKK, SQ 1/64
First
Great flight; typical indulgent SQ service, amenities and best of all, 6.5 hours of nonstop sleep. I love SQ and a great way to start my trip. Rating: A+

Bangkok
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit
This is a luxury collection hotel that I booked on Priceline; I originally reserved for one night only as I was planning to depart to another destination the next day. Plans changed, so I made a second booking at the Shangri-La. The Sheraton is a fine hotel - great service, nice if smallish pool, good location. I would not pay a full rate here, but at my rate - $59 plus taxes - a fantastic bargain! Rating: B+

Shangri-La Krungthep Wing
So what is all the hype about? The Shangri-La common areas are decadent and modern, while the rooms - at least mine - was very in need of renovation. I felt like I was in a Golden Girls episode. Still, fine place to stay for 3 nights before my next destination. Rating: B

Destination
Bangkok is a nice city - you can find anything there, and I mean ANYTHING. The Shangri-La is poorly located for walking in the city, but then Bangkok is not much of a pedestrian city anyway. Rating: B

Bangkok Airways
BKK-Siem Reap, ATR 72
Arriving 32 minutes before my flight I was sure to be left off. Not so with Bangkok Airways - they checked me in, tagged my bag, and off I went to the departure lounge. Boarding started soon after for the 100% full flight to REP. The ATR holds (I think) about 60 people, based on my count. PG's are in major need of overhaul; the cabins are VERY tired. Still, for a 50 minute flight, manageable. Meal service was a box of snack looking items which I politely declined the contents of. Rating: C-

Hotel De La Paix, Siem Reap
This is my first trip to Siem Reap; I had heard so many great things about it. My first day consisted of city exploration, saving the remaining for temple hopping. I was not disappointed; Siem Reap is a dusty, exotic SE Asian city that is coming into its own. My first impression was of the people, who are so friendly and hospitable that one does not want to leave. Hotel de la Paix is phenomenal; the staff, the rooms, the lounge, everything. I would not hesitate to go back again in a minute, to Siem Reap and to this hotel. The temples are absolutely awe-inspiring; I am a photographer so they offered many varied conditions and outstanding photos. All in all, Cambodia is a diamond in the rough, and worthy of everyone's visit. Rating: A+

Vietnam Airlines
REP-SGN, Airbus A320
I had booked business class by mistake on this flight at the travel agency in Siem Reap; the language thing caused the mistake, I think. As she explained in broken English after the ticket was issued, the difference in cost is only $40 and so I let it be. The airport in Siem Reap is quaint and surprisingly modern. I was very sad to leave it behind, but know I will return. There isn't much to say about the flight; boarded a long in the tooth A320; took my seat, we took off, we landed and in between they tried to serve me something to eat which I declined. I was the only one in business and so had my own bus to the terminal, kind of awkward. Rating: hmm, B I guess.

New World Hotel
I had heard so many good things about the New World Hotel that I decided I had to give it a try. I was severely disappointed by the accomodations. This is supposed to be a 5* hotel, with 5* amenities. Instead, at least my room, was a 3* Holiday Inn if that, and left me seriously underwhelmed. Rating: C-

Ho Chi Minh City
Well, I came here to see the madness everyone talks about and they were right; it is crazy. Completely insane, chaos. There is a kind of poetic fluidity to it all when watched from afar, but when you are trying to cross the street...well, best to advise major caution. I also visited the Mekong Delta, which is stunning. After two days, I had enough of the madness, and left. Rating: C because of the traffic

Singapore Airlines
SGN-SIN-DPS (Bali)
Business Class
My next destination was Bali, and I could not wait to get there so I left SGN two days early. I booked last minute on the SQ's website and found that a C-class full fare was available all the way to Bali for 400USD. Not bad, considering Y was 300. I did the deed and went to the airport the next morning. SGN airport is a little bit of a zoo - they are building a new terminal for int'l flights, but until then, I advise lots of extra time. The computers were down, then up, then down again. Took 45 minutes to check in and I was the only one in C-class line. Flights were nice - Raffles on the SGN-SIN, regional business on the SIN-DPS leg. Rating: A.

Sheraton Nusa Dua
Wow. Booked 5 nights here using Starwood points; great value, and what a stunning hotel. It did not disappoint in anyway, even though it was undergoing renovations and was kind of loud at times. The room was a newly renovated one, and was huge with a balcony and nice bathroom. I would not hestitate to stay here again, ever. My first impressions of Bali were more than I had hoped for; I avoided the tourist areas and stuck to the off-the-beaten-path ones. Rating: A+.

Four Seasons Sayan (Ubud)
After 7 nights in Sheraton Nusa Dua (2 paid, 5 free), I went to Four Seasons Sayan. WOW. Tucked away along the Ayung River with 45 villas and 15 suites, the FS Sayan leaves little to the imagination. The 2 story villas are very private with plunge pools and a nice outdoor sitting area; indoor and outdoor showers; and fabulous evening sounds of the rushing waters of the Ayung River. This is truly paradise, Eden on earth. This is simply the most STUNNING resort property I have ever seen. Rating: A+++++.

Bali Overall
I think Bali is amazing. The people possess gentle souls and big, honest smiles that won me over. Balinese are known for many pleasant things - carving, arts, dance, gentleness, kindness - and as long as you stay away from the main tourist area of Kuta, I think you will find it. The traffic is insane, but the island really is one of the most precious places on Earth. I fell so deeply for it that I want to move there; that's another story. Rating: off the charts

Also spent some time in Surabaya and Denpasar, utilizing Adam Air and Garuda. Suffice to say that Garuda beats Adam Air on every count and is in fact quite a good carrier. Did not stay in hotels in either city so cannot give a report.

MAY 2006
Singapore Airlines
CGK/Jakarta-SIN-PVG/Shanghai
Business and First
When checking in at the CGK airport, I got a pleasant surprise; SIN-PVG was oversold in business, and so I was bumped to first. The flight CGK-SIN was an A340, and I wanted to try this business class to compare to the 777 I had on SGN-SIN. This business class is superior in comfort and spaciousness; the 777 felt a little cramped. The 777-300 from SIN-PVG had only 2 people in F in the end; both op-ups. That was a pleasant flight, with full caviar and dom service. Early arrival in stormy PVG meant waiting for a gate, then an extra long taxi into town (pouring rain). Rating: A

Westin Shanghai
Despite being severely overpriced, the Westin Shanghai is nice. The pool facilities - something important to me on these trips as a swimmer - were top notch. Location is nice in the Bund neighborhood, closeby to shopping and the river. The rooms are also very nice, typical city size; bit small but good amenities and nice bathroom. Rating: B-.

Shanghai
Explosive growth and construction cranes mark the face of this rapidly evolving city. My 5 days were cursed with heavy rain and clouds, but I still managed to get out to see the nice city, Chinese acrobats (Shanghai Circus World) and a few foot massages. All in all, Shanghai is a world city as it claims; I felt at home there, and despite not speaking any Chinese, had little difficulty finding my way around. Rating: B

PVG-BKK-SIN
Thai Airways PVG-BKK
Airbus A330
Business
I slept most of this flight; I think there was a meal, and not sure about the movies/entertainment but from previous C-class experience on the A330 do not remember it be overwhelming. Early arrival in BKK meant no gate waiting for us; final arrival at the gate was on time.

Finnair BKK-SIN
MD-11
Business
I really wanted to try Finnair's new business class; the one-way fare in business was only $99, so I indulged. I had to exit customs and immigration and go back upstairs to check in, which was relatively painless. I got the seat I wanted, a window in the first row on the right (LOADS of extra room there), and went to the lovely Qantas lounge for a drink and some sammie's before boarding. Upon boarding, I was pleasant surprised; the new business class is really nice! I had forgotten how LARGE the windows on the MD-11 were; much bigger than other aircraft, or my imagination? The flight was pretty empty in business - only 9 - and the service was also very slow. I reclined the seat and went right to sleep and skipped the meal, but the menu left something to be desired for me. Still, a comfortable flight in a great business class and I would not hesitate to fly them on this route again, especially for that price! Rating: B

Raffles The Plaza
Another Priceline room - $100/night for 2 nights, not a bad deal for this hotel. I arrived sort of late on the first night so had a quick dinner in Suntec food court and went to sleep. Next day was gorgeous - walked around Orchard Road, got a foot massage, watched Da Vinci Code on its second night - a pleasant Singapore day. Third day, got another foot massage and then went to the airport for my flight.

Singapore Airlines
SIN-FRA
First Class
When I initially booked in business class on this flight, I found that after book and going to select my seats there were none available. I found that odd, so called up SQ in the states to get the seat assignment. Indeed, the friendly agent said that on this particular flight Raffles was fully booked, but I could wait for a seat at the airport. I asked how much to upgrade to First and if there were seats; the right price and my preferred seat - 2A - and I was on my way. This was the day flight so full service of caviar, full meals, the works. It is a long flight because of being all daytime and somewhere just north of Iran, we hit turbulence like I've never experienced. Cabin crew had to quickly stow their carts and be seated for close to 90 minutes. We were 20 minutes late getting in Frankfurt as a result of trying to route around the turbulence and the captain, flight stewards and purser were very apologetic. I did not have a connection to make so did not really care. Rating: B- b/c of turbulence.

Sheraton FRA Airport
Stayed here one night - not much to say. Went in, checked in, showered, went to sleep. Woke next morning, had breakfast, back to airport.

Croatia Airlines
FRA-DBV/Dubrovnik
Business
Economy class was sold out in cheap fare classes on this early morning flight so I opted for a $30 upgrade to business. I figured the extra RDM would be worth the $30. What a terrible little airline; I am forgiving, but from boarding to deplaning, not one of the flight crew said anything to anyone that I saw. They were stoic and silent, using pantomime and gesturing to get their work done. The "meal" was inedible steamed dumplings - no filling - with bread crumbs on top. Seats are typical EU business - 3x3, with middle blocked. Best part was arriving in DBV and getting off. Rating: D

Stayed in an apartment in Dubrovnik for one week and was pleasantly surprised by some things, but overall disappointed. I was expecting more than just hordes and busses FULL UP of German and British tourists wearing socks with their sandals. Well, at least I can say I've seen Croatia; not sure I'd go back, and definitely not to Dubrovnik. Rating: C

JUNE 2006
Croatia Airlines
DBV-LGW
Y Class
I flew to BCN the long way - DBV-LGW-BCN, with the DBV-LGW on Croatia Airlines and BA on the second leg. This flight was better - I was in the last row of the airplane, 28C, and blessedly, mine was the only empty row on the whole plane. I layed down and went to sleep for about 90 minutes of the 2 hr flight. When I woke we were beginning our descent into LGW, and arrived on time. The crew on this flight were slightly better; I saw they were at least talking to the passengers. Maybe they went to a different school of etiquette. Rating: indifference, but C

British Airways
LGW-BCN
Y class
I have always like BA's intra-European Y class. The seats are nice, the cupholder on the armrest is a useful, and I find the cabin very inviting in general. This flight - 737-500 - was packed to the gills with holiday makers and a LARGE group of 12 year olds seemingly going on some sort of retreat but I had been seated in the exit row, thanks BA! Flight departed and arrived on-time, not much else in way of service but the cabin crew were very polite and friendly, and I was surprised at how efficient they were with the sandwich/2x drink run/duty free cart services on a 90 minute flight. Rating: B+

Barcelona
Hotel B
Gran Via
NICE hotel at the right price, just slightly outside the center of Barcelona next to the old bullring (now being converted to a shopping center) in Plaza de la Espanya. It is close to the metro and therefore convenient. I found the whole hotel charming; services are limited but you are near so many good restaurants and anyway, who eats room service in a city that doesn't eat dinner until midnight? I love Barcelona for its modern vs. historic charm, and had a great 5 days. Rating on both BCN and the hotel: A

TAP Air Portugal
BCN-LIS-OPO/Porto
Y class
An early morning flight, but the B-Hotel is only 15 minutes from the airport which is ideal. Slept from BCN-LIS, not sure what took place for breakfast or what not; arrived a bit late in LIS. Had a short connection, but fortunately - this NEVER happens when you need it! - we parked at a jetbridge, and the connecting flight left from the bussed gate just downstairs. Otherwise, would have never made it. I was not particularly worried as TP run about 10 flights a day LIS-OPO. Made the connection and 38 minutes later were in Porto. TAP are not exactly luxurious; for short flights, I have no hesitation. For longer flights - North America, Africa - not sure I'd choose them. You see, the female flight attendants wear these little gloves during boarding and I always pictured them taking the gloves off and slapping a passenger who asked a stupid question. Anyway, rating: B.

Sheraton Porto
Fabulous hotel in a nice little city - great spa, great breakfast (Veuve, caviar!!!). Rating: A

Porto
The historic area is a World Heritage Site, and is much more charming (I think) than in Lisbon. Also went to Braga and Guimaraes to see some holy places in Portugal. Porto is a pleasant if industrial city; it has a bad reputation as a place where you can do nothing, which I find unfair. I found plenty of diversions and never once felt like it was a bore. That said, I am not sure I would return to Porto soon; there is not much left for me to see. Rating: B+

TAP Air Portugal
OPO-LIS
Y class
Quick hop on TP to LIS. Oddly enough, got to boarding gate as the signs all said "Boarding." Aircraft was there, but no gate agents and door was shut. Hmm. Waited 25 minutes, gate agent shows up, takes her purse from a locker below the desk, walks away. 5 minutes later - boards now showing "Departed," must be automatic - gate agent comes back, opens door, everyone boards. No boarding announcements were ever made. Left the gate only 10 minutes late (very light flight, not full), captain apologizes in Portuguese for the delay. Bags in LIS took 50 minutes to arrive. Odd. Rating: D for the ground services

Marriott Lisbon
OK, so Tripadvisor says this is a good hotel in an OK location, convenient to the subway to central Lisbon. I disagree on both points. It is an average hotel in an average location, and is not all that convenient to the subway. Lisbon weather was not cooperating - rain and overcast - and decided that after two days, had enough and flew to Madrid. Not the world's biggest fan of Lisbon at this point, maybe judged it too soon. Rating for both: D+

Iberia
LIS-MAD
Business Class
Booked this last minute on Iberia website and only business was available; also checked TP, and same. So, off on Iberia I went. Check in was smooth, agents friendly (I speak Spanish, hey it helps!). Flight was on a long in the tooth MD-87, but on the short flight the friendly crew did manage a meal and 3 beverage runs in business class. On time arrival in Madrid, and quick baggage delivery. Rating: B+

Hotel Quo Puerta del Sol
Nice little hotel in the middle of the city. Rooms are tiny, loud and bright but modern, and clean. I would look around for a bigger room but otherwise would stay here again. Rating: B+

Madrid
Love it - modern, clean, lots of history, close to great World Heritage Sites like Escorial and Toledo. Madrid has so much to offer, and is severely underrated. Rating: A+

Iberia
Madrid-Granada
Business Class
Part of a MAD-GRX-MAD-JNB ticket on Iberia, otherwise would not choose business on such a short flight. Actually, the service on this flight was fabulous. I speak Spanish and this definitely helps with cabin crews and Iberia ground staff; a little trouble with my ticket on check in, not sure why, but the friendly ticket agent helped sort it out with the check in clerk. Flight was short - 45 minutes - on another MD-88. I was the only one in business, and was showered with attention and beverages. Breakfast was served - HOT! - and surprisingly, in two courses. They had some leftover fruit from the captain's meal and asked if I might not prefer to have that; I said, may I have both? So they served me the fruit first and the hot portion later. Rating: A

Hotel Hesperia Granada
Average, small rooms with fake wood flooring. Loud, and despite claiming on their website when I booked it that they are 30 metres from the Alhambra entrance with views from some rooms, it is not true. Still, good value for a hotel in the center of the city and convenient enough to Alhambra. Rating: C+

Granada
Love it - Alhambra is the main attraction, but there is actually a lot to see and do here, and the city is very "Spanish." Gypsies on the outskirts of Sacramonte who live in pseudo-caves and perform Flamenco are a sight to see; watch your belongings here, they are sly :) Rating: A

That's it for now - tonight, headed Granada-MAD-JNB, then have a month in Africa - Capetown, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe then Dubai, finally in Cairo and Luxor, then home. Stay tuned for the rest of the trip report.

So, will continue where I left off before heading into the African bush for 14 days.

Iberia
Granada-Madrid
MD-88
Business
This is the first leg of Granada-Johannesburg. Not much to say about it; Granada airport is TINY, but quaint. Flight was short, they managed to serve a light snack and we arrived on-time in Madrid after passing through some thunderheads. Always fun.

Iberia
Madrid-JNB
Airbus A340-300
New Business Class
I had 2.5 hours connecting time in Madrid and this gave me time to explore the beautiful new terminal. Eventually, I made my way via train to the international departing gates and went to the Iberia lounge. They offer a dinner snack service in a small makeshift restaurant for long-haul departing passengers. I made use of this and enjoyed a light snack of cheeses, some strange deep-fried chicken in a currant/raisin/apricot/sour sauce (blech!), and fruits. The lounge itself does not have any real food to speak of so if you want a light meal, it has to be taken in the restaurant. After hanging out in the lounge for a couple of hours I slowly made my way to the boarding gate. The flight was unevenly full tonight - 9 in business but full in Y - but boarding was through the front door so coach was walking through. Iberia's new business class is FANTASTIC; I give a MAJOR thumbs up, and I think it is the best C across the Atlantic (at least a close tie w/BA). The seat is the lie-flat at an angle type, dressed in subtle browns and overall the cabin is warm, comfortable and inviting. The amenity kit is great, the in-flight on-demand TV is great, the food is good, and the blankets/pillows are snuggly. Overall, the service on this flight was top-notch, although below the expectations of SQ/CX. The flight attendants were a little curmudgeonly, but I warmed them with my charm :) We took off a bit late due to no-shows at the gate (bags had to be offloaded). Flight took us over north Africa, then straight down the center of the continent for 10h30m. Dinner was served QUICKLY after departure - flight departed after midnight. Light dinner of soup, pasta, pate all on one tray. Dessert followed and 45 minutes after takeoff lights were out. I slept about 6 hours, and woke for a movie then breakfast (typical continental style). We arrived about 30 minutes late; 40 minutes after landing, I was tucked comfortably into the airport hotel.

Intercontinental Hotel - JNB Airport
This is directly across from the arrivals hall in JNB airport. It's convenient and they know it! Rates are high, but I was only overnighting in transit to CPT and they are happy to do long-term baggage storage if you tip them a little; FYI, long-term baggage storage in JNB airport is about 40 rand per day. They have nice facilities at the hotel but mostly I slept, walked around the airport, and slept until my next flight.

South African Airways
JNB-CPT
Business Class
B747-400
I specifically booked this flight to take advantage of the 747 service on the route and to sit in the Millenium first seats; they do not offer FIRST class domestically so the cabin is open to C ticket holders. I chose the first row,, 1K. Boarding was quick and efficient - the lounge in JNB is not self-serve, everything is behind the bar. Upon first insepection, I feel the the first class cabin on SAA is wide-open space; something felt missing to me. The seats are nice, the TV screens too small (bit dated), and the service was hum-drum. We got a light snack, then I dozed for about 30 minutes. I wouldn't necessarily pay for C class on SAA domestic/regional flights; not worth it in my experience as others have noted. On-time arrival in Capetown.

An African Villa
(search on Google for it if interested)
Located in Tamboerskloof, this quaint guesthouse could not have been a more perfect remedy for much needed R&R. I felt very much like I was a guest in someone's nice home; breakfast was abundant as was the conversation with my fellow guests and the owner. I felt at home, and enjoyed exploring Capetown's many sights. I am an outdoors person so the perfect weather enabled hiking up Table Mtn; mtn biking in Cape Point; and in general, overall enjoyment of Capetown. I was struck by the city's charming people and great personality and would return in a minute.

South African Airways
CPT-JNB
Y class
737-800
Boring flight in uncomfortable seats, the ones everyone hates located right in front of the exit row (very upright, no recline). I slept the entire flight so no idea what the service was but my olfactory senses said omelette and sausage when I woke for landing.

I am in the JNB airport right now awaiting my flight to Lusaka, Zambia (hoping for an operational upgrade, they are overbooked!!). Will note the details of this and future endeavors in a post in July.

Til then...happy reading.

BELOW IS THE CONTINUATION OF THE TRIP REPORT....sorry for yelling :)

21-Jun
South African Airways
737-800
JNB-Lusaka, Zambia

I do not remember much about this flight save for one oddity - at 15 minutes to boarding the exclaimed they were overbooked by 20 people and were looking for volunteers. As it turned out, the flight went out just over half full which confused me. South African Airways Y class seats, at least on the 737-800, are not comfortable AT ALL in the upright position. They extend to 90 degrees and the seat backs are not contoured - they need to work on this.

Zambian Airways
EMB-120
Lusaka-Mfuwe Airport

Zambian Airways is a tiny national carrier in Zambia - they have 6 aircraft, all turboprop, and one wet-leased Comair/BA plane for JNB runs. The Lusaka airport is very African - sort of disorganized but friendly people help you on your way soon enough. I had only 10 minutes to make my connection as the inbound South African Airways flight was late, but my connecting flight was also late. The airline business in Zambia confused me although I later figured out the system. Zambian Airways and Airwaves merged into one carrier, and preserved their original planes/route structure; thus, they operate as codeshare-type airlines but in a rudimentary way that would not be entirely clear upon first encounter. Well, anyway there will only be one plane going in your general direction so it is not hard to find your flight. Flight time was 45 minutes and a beverage and snack service was made.

Puku Ridge Tented Camp
This is tented camp run by Star of Africa is unique because of its location overlooking giant watering holes; the views are astounding. I ended up being the only guest staying with them that week so I had the run of the place and got to choose my accomodations from their 10 tents. I was very impressed by the service and staff at Puku Ridge and would definitely return. Game sighted: lion pride, giraffe and lots of puku and impala.

25-Jun
Zambian Airways
EMB-120
Mfuwe-Lusaka

As I said this is a small airline so seeing the same crews as on my outbound leg should come as no surprise. The real shocker comes when they remember you and say hi! Uneventful flight and on-time landing.

Airwaves Airlink
Cessna Caravan
Mfuwe-Jeki Airstrip, via Royal Airstrip

I was going to the lower Zambezi on this trip and the game camps on that area are served by their own airstrips, typically shared between a few camps. These are nothing more than grass or dirt strips carved out of the landscape with no services or buildings - all paperwork is handled by the pilots. Brief flight to Royal Airstrip to drop off some passengers - had to buzz the strip twice to encourage a family of baboons to take leave! Dropped off the passengers then flew to Jeki Airstrip, about 10 minutes away.

Kulefu Tented Camp
Lower Zambezi

This camp is also run by Star of Africa. The nice surprise? I was once again the only guest for the week, meaning I would have the place and the guides to myself. I could get used to that treatment! Lower Zambezi is a great place to go canoe, fishing and walking in addition to the typical night drives. This camp just moved to its current sight from one upriver - the vegetation was a little worn from all of the construction but once it grows back it will be a true camp again. The tents are luxurious - thick bedding and towels make for a cozy stay! Game sighted: lots of hippo, cevit, leopard, elephants by the herds, and many birds.

28-Jun
Airwaves Airlink
Jeki Airstrip-Lusaka
Cessna Caravan

Once again I was the only passenger on this 25 minute flight to Lusaka. Not much else to say about it than that.

Zambian Airways
Lusaka-Livingstone
Beechcraft 1900

This was another uneventful flight - the Beechcraft 1900 is an aging aircraft. The interior had yellowed quite noticeably and the windows, once tinted, looked like something out of a 1960s board game (think yellow plastic).

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
Zimbabwe

I had a quick road transfer from Zambia to Zimbabwe, then one night's stay at the Vic Falls Safari Lodge. Zimbabwe now charges 30USD for a visa to enter upon arrival. This did not leave me with enough cash to actually GO to Victoria Falls - another 20USD -because I did not anticipate the extra expense. Zimbabwe side only accepts US currency for a visit to the falls if you are American (this is what I was told again and again), and I didn't have enough on me, so I didn't go. Instead I relaxed and enjoyed the lodge as best I could then got out of there as quickly as possible the next morning.

I had a road transfer to Botswana/Kasane Airport, then a charter flight into the Chobe from there. The road transfer and border crossings were uneventful.

Charter Flight
Kasane Airport-Savute Elephant Camp
Cessna 172

This old lady was my ride to the Chobe - the aircraft must have been 30 years old. The flight into Chobe took about an hour and the winds were "active" meaning...lots of topsy turvy. I have a strong stomach for turbulence, but this got to me - I was bothered by the time we finally landed, and I could not wait to step out of the aircraft. Sigh, what a relief!

Savute Elephant Camp
Chobe Nat'l Park
Botswana

This camp must be 6 stars - run by Orient Express Safaris. I am not a big luxury person and so all of the amenities, the perfectly tucked sheets and tosed pillows, the gourmet meals served on fine bone china...was too much for me. I did not appreciate all of these amenities as it did not feel like a real camp. The others are open, animals can wander through freely to their liking; this one has an electric fence around it to keep them out. I stayed only two nights anyway and was anxious to leave.

Charter Flight
Savute Elephant Camp-Nxabega
Okavango Delta, Botswana
Cessna 206

Stepping back onto a charter flight was not top of my list after the last flight. Blessedly, today's flight was smoother. We had to make 3 stops - one to pick up passengers, one to drop them off another place, then my stop. All in it was about 2 hours long, a good length of time to be airborne in a small Cessna. The pilots had trouble with the battery connected to the starter and so had to do some manual work on the engine each time we started up; then the fuel gauges weren't working, hovering on empty. I pointed this out to them and they just laughed; "oh, you never trust the gauges on these things. We always dip the tanks." Hmm, ok.

Nxabega Tented Camp
Okavango Delta, Botswana

Wow. This camp surpassed all of my expectations! This is a very rustic and true camp - the tents are positioned along two long paths that are barely carved from the bush. Animals roam free - you can see animal tracks everywhere. The camp is larger than the others - 14 tents - but somehow more intimate. I arrived mid-day and waited around until evening to catch a boat ride into the Delta for sunset. This was a really lovely camp, lots of activities available beyond the standards, and I fully enjoyed myself. Over three days I saw many different lion, elephant, zebra, giraffe, leopard, frogs, snakes, hippo, and even the rare bird or two. The guides are fantastic at this camp and the food is great. It is all run by locals - unlike most camps, and their knowledge of the local area is evident in their planning. Sadly, I had to leave after staying in this camp for just 4 days to go back to reality.

3-Jul
Charter Flight
Nxabega-Maun, Botswana
Cessna 172

This is a very short flight across the Delta to Maun, a large town with commercial air services. The airport there seems to be quite new at first glance.

Air Botswana
Maun-Johannesburg
BAE-146

I had a couple of hours before my scheduled commercial flight into Johannesburg. I wandered the airport, which only two 5 minutes, then went into the departures area. I noticed a lot of friendly faces - including some people I had shared one charter flight with - and said hello to everyone. Soon enough the flight was boarding. The BAE-146 is a very comfortable aircraft, top-mounted wings. Originally we were scheduled to be on an ATR-72 for this flight but blessedly they upgauged to the Bae. The flight itself was about 105 minutes and snacks were served - crisps and biltong, the African version of jerky. We landed in Johannesburg 45 minutes early (!), and I was on my way for an overnight stay before my onward journey.

Balalaika Sandton Hotel
Sandton, South Africa

This hotel stay was part of my safari package. It is connected to a nice shopping mall and the hotel itself is nice enough I guess. The layout is bizarre - I felt like I was walking through the back halls just to get to my room. But they are appointed nicely if a little basic, and comfort is good. It was cold in Johannesburg by the time I settled - about 45degrees F - so I stayed inside and did not go too far. I had a mid-day flight the following day and had a leisurely breakfast before checking out to catch...

Emirates 762

Boeing 777-300
First Class, 1K

After checking in I headed to the Emirates lounge - a tiny little contracted thing. Why doesn't Emirates use the South African Airways FIRST lounge since they codeshare this flight? Anyway, I waited and waited and waited around, then headed to the boarding gate and found a mess of people lined up. There is no such thing as preferred boarding in Johannesburg - they open the door and everyone goes on together. After about 30 minutes I found my seat and settled in. We had an early departure out of Johannesburg and were airborne after a very short taxi out. The flight was about 7h45m. I honestly do not remember much about the food - I had various selections from their menu, all served from a cart. The food was good but not top-notch. I was rather disappointed in the meals but the service was excellent - always asking to serve you a drink or snack. Later, before landing, we had a small snack, that I also do not remember much about; I recall it being quite tasty though. Emirates 773 First seats are lovely, especially the window seat. 1A and 1K probably have the most privacy I personally have ever seen in an airline cabin - you are cocooned in and nobody walks past you except the cabin crew. It reminds me of 1B in Singapore Airlines 747 First cabin. The on-demand video is great and the in-seat bar is useful. All in all, I would definitely fly Emirates first again but would prefer SQ or another carrier first. My confirmed limo transfer (really a Volvo) was waiting for me.

Sheraton Dubai Creek

Nice luxurious hotel with good amenities and restaurants. It is downtown, not on the beach area but is close to some good shopping malls and is central for getting around to various sights. I took a desert safari one day - the jeep kind where they crash up and down the dunes - and had a blast.

Emirates 927
DXB-Cairo
Airbus 330, First

I had planned to arrive quite early for this flight so I could explore the Dubai airport. I confirmed my car transfer back to the airport ahead of time to ensure the time would be sufficient. I checked out and waited, and waited, and waited for the car and it never showed up. So I took a taxi and am going to write a nasty letter to Emirates as a result. By the time I checked in and got through security and passport control, I had only 20 minutes to visit the two lounges before boarding began. I quickly did a flyby of both - they were both so packed like I've never seen an airport lounge - then went to my flight. I boarded, took my seat, and went right to sleep. The flight was 3 hours and they served breakfast which I refused; was not hungry. Based on my seat mate's offering, it looked basic and not all that good anyway. We arrived in Cairo and I took a taxi to my hotel.

Sheraton Royal Gardens
Cairo

This hotel is near the pyramids so I chose it for that and the rate - 50USD/night. The hotel is actually quite nice if dated - the grounds are lush and a nice retreat from crazy Cairo streets. The rooms are definitely feeling their age but are kept clean and in good working order. I found the staff at this hotel polite and truly lovely. I hired a guide to take me around on two different days to various sights. I will save my report on the pyramids and such for later, but they are big, impressive, crowded and very humbling.

Egypt Air
Cairo-Luxor
Airbus A321, Business Class
1A

I took business class on this hour long flight because it was only 40USD more to do so and I was grateful to have the extra luggage allowance for the domestic flight. This was a 6:05A departure - Egyptian domestic flights all seem to leave at this time of day. The Cairo Airport is actually not so bad - I had heard horror stories about peddlers, this and that but basically I did not experience any of it. Maybe it was too early for that crowd :) Anyway, we departed ontime and I was served a light breakfast of warm breads, fruits, cheeses and meats. Sufficient and actually delicious for the short flight. Seating on this flight in C was 3x2 convertible like in Europe.

Sheraton Luxor Resort

Yikes. I was scared when I arrived and found the lobby to be very, very shabby. I had a hestitation and nearly walked away to go to the Le Meridien which looked nice, further into the middle of town. But I persevered and am glad I did. The Sheraton Luxor is offering special remodeling rates right now - 45USD/night - and the last things to be done are the lobby and common areas. This means the rooms are all remodeled and in good, brand new shape. I found my room to be cozy if not luxurious, with thick linens and towels, and good amenities. They have a refrigerator in the room where you order it filled by room service or fill it yourself with purchases from the "street-priced" shop in the hotel. I had a great two days in Luxor, exploring the Valley of Kings and Valley of Queens, Luxor Temple and other sights.

Airbus A320
Business Class, 9A

I arrived a little late for this flight and was worried I would not make it. As it turned out, I had plenty of time. I checked in and noticed I was assigned seat 9A - certainly an Airbus A320 could not have 9 rows of business, right? I was certain I was seated in the wrong cabin, but hopeful they had changed the flight back to an A330 as originally booked. I peered out as the planed landed and sure enough, it was an A320. Hmm. As it is only an hour long flight I decided no matter what cabin, I was not going to raise a fuss. I boarded to find the business cabin on this plane begins with row 8 - great, and is traditional 2x2 seating. The seats were actually very comfortable and reclined quite far. Service was the same as my flight down and soon enough we landed in Cairo again.

Sheraton Cairo and Towers

I wanted to stay in a different hotel to get a downtown feeling for Cairo - so I chose this one. It got good reviews and deserves them - it is really nice. The room I was given was a junior suite upgrade on the 25th floor, great views of the Nile and city.

Lufthansa 585
CAI-FRA
5:25A departure
Business Class, 15D

This was an Airbus A330 service up to Frankfurt, where I would connect to Chicago and then to see my family. Being such an early morning departure, I chose to sleep as soon as boarding and so did everyone else - LH hold the cabin service on this flight back to 1 hr before landing in Frankfurt which is a good idea. This was new business class - and I liked it, but the seat has a temper. I found the full flat position too coffin-like and chose a "Z" shape, which worked better. The movie system is great but because I slept for 3 hours only caught a little bit of one Hindi movie. I skipped breakfast, so do not know what was served but think it was an omelette or muesli along with fruits and breads.

Lufthansa 430

747-400, Business 2C

This was OLD business; what a disappointment. I was hoping it had changed to NBC, but this particular flight is not yet upgraded; the afternoon flight to ORD is, in fact, new business. I boarded and met my seatmate, a gentle Italian elder who was pleased to learn one of the cabin crew spoke Italian. We waited and waited and finally everyone had boarded, then we pushed. Flight time was 7h40m to Chicago. We took off and service began. The seat and in-flight entertainment in LH old business are terrible; small screens in the seat, 48" pitch. The food matches this - it was terrible! I have not had airline food that bad since the old days of hot meals on domestic US flights. I had some odd enchilada stuffed with cream cheese (note to the chef: cream cheese is not good for "stuffing", it melts), served over corn. It was such a strange meal. I was seriously disappointed. I slept for a good 4 hours then awoke to watch a movie. Shortly thereafter, the "savory snack" was served for Chicago landing. This consisted of beef in gravy or sandwich, plus fruit salad. Blech. At least we landed on time.

United 1248

Not much to say about this flight - 45 minutes, drinks served. The end.

United 7580
CMH-ORD
EMB-170

Was supposed to travel on this flight the day before but bad storms in Chicago made for a 6 hr delay so decided to cut losses and stay in Columbus another night. This flight was on-time and packed full. Incidentally, the EMB-170 really IS a comfortable passenger cabin and is worthy of the praise it receives.

W Hotel Lakeshore
Chicago

What is the big deal with this hotel? We found the rooms cramped (dark ceilings), lobby too loud and the design not user friendly. Anyway, only two nights here so it was bearable, but...would not be my first choice again.

23-Jul
United 139
ORD-SFO
Y Class, B747-400

Anxious to get home, we raced to the airport for the 9:55A flight and checked our bags in. At 8:45A on a Sunday morning, United had only ONE person working the Premier easy check-in desks in ORD and it took 20 minutes for her to tag our bags. They went in a big pile behind her. Foreshadowing, A BIG PILE. We went through a long security line and walked right onto the plane - seats 60HJ. I like these seats as they are in the tail and are 2 together - with extra room beside to stretch legs, etc. I like them better than E+ for this reason. We left the gate 5 minutes early and took off towards SFO; made good time and landed at 11:45a, 30 minutes early, and parked in the int'l terminal. Walked over to domestic baggage claim where we waited almost 90 minutes for our bags to never appear. Waited in another long line at the baggage services to learn our bags did not make the flight but were coming on an afternoon arrival. Fortunately, we live only 20 minutes from the airport so getting back to collect them was not a major hassle but the attitude of the United Airlines baggage service guy could not be less inspired.

Interesting thing to note here: I travelled for 4 months all around the world, flew dozens of carriers and over 40 flights, and the ONLY time I experienced a problem with my flights was in the US - and it happened back to back. 6 hr delay on one flight due to weather, lost bag on another.
