In preparation for the Cow Do II, I've been looking over my lodging choices, and I'm intrigued by Casa Monserrat (http://www.casa-monserrat.com/) , which seems to cost about 33 USD per night, plus tax. The reviews I've seen suggests it's a jewel hidden in a seedy neighborhood. That sounds about right, for my tastes. Does anyone, here, have any experience with this place, in paricular, or other places, in the same price range? I'm also seeing hostel beds from 6 USD, per night, and I'm not sure I'm up for that, but I'll listen to anything. Thank you, in advance, for your sharing.

Looks pretty good to me. I'm not sure why you are worried about the location, from the map it looks decent. I've walked that part of BsAs late at night, and never felt uncofortable.
I've stayed in both a hostel and an inexpensive hotel there (I'd have to look for names, don't recall off the top of my head), and both were OK. In fact the hostel was a shared room with a Mexican doctor who was there on a long term stay doing a fellowship in a subspeciality (don't recall which one).
At any rate, looks like a nice hotel. Enjoy the DOO and have some excellent Argentinian beef.

The seediness of the neighborhood attracts, not repels me. My reference to the neighborhood is based on the reviews I've read. I've never visited Buenos Aires, and I'm pretty excited about it!
Now, I'm also looking at Casa Esmeralda, "in the heart of old Palermo", a small hostel with 8 USD dorm rooms and a friendly dog.

You might want to consider getting the Starwood American Express card if you don't have it already. You get 4,000 bonus points for signing up, which is enough for a free night in the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center or Sheraton Libertador hotel. I signed up for it and stayed a night in the Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center and felt it was one of the best values for a credit card signup that I've gotten.
I also stayed at a hotel in Recoleta that was less than $40 a night. It was the Ayacucho Palace Hotel. (www.ayacuchohotel.com.ar) The rooms were basic but it was in a good location.

Gee I'm turning nostalgic....
The area around Casa Monserrat has a great many hotels - many of which would have much fancier thirty years ago. Having said that we stayed in Novel Hotel ** on Avenida de Mayo which while acceptable and very inexpensive, had a very small room and a recently renovated (but small) bath. I would probably consider one of the many *** hotels if (when) I get to visit again.
I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them, the general area is amazing, it just depends on your budget.......
Happy wandering

Thank you, all, for sharing you insights. I'm now leaning toward the Casa Esmeralda, it looks like a really fun place to stay and relax, plus, I really need to keep my costs way down. All my travelling has been causing some financial strain.
Stayed here about a year ago:

I paid 28 pesos per night for a four-share with ensuite. Not sure about current rates. Great building, close to subways, well kept.
And if you end up in room 204, you'll have a balcony overlooking Hipolito Irigoyen. Not bad for a hostel. I believe the property also has private rooms.
