I will have one day to spend in Bangkok later this month due to overseas connection. I arrive around 8pm and depart 7pm the following day. I would appreciate suggestions of where to stay and what to see in such a short window.

If you want to try a Thai massage (legitimate) then Miss Puke on Siam Square (opposite the Novotel) is great. 3 hours for about $10.

There's a ton of threads with lots of great recommendations.

In general it would help if you mentioned what types of things you generally find interesting when visiting other foreign countries/cities? Nightlife, museums, shopping, architecture, dining, etc. It might also help if you mentioned which day of the week you'll be in town.

And lastly what types of hotels you prefer (chain, big/small, cheap, expensive)?

One day really doesn't give you much time given how challenging it can be to get around town.

Maybe pick one from each column (http://www.bangkoksite.com/Places%20to%20See/index.htm)?

My standard one-day itinerary for visitors:

As others have said, you need to give us a few more hints on your budget and what you want to see/do for more tailored recommendations...

If I had just one day in Bangkok, I think I would:

1. Visit Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo).

2. Take a longtail boat tour of the Chao Phraya River.

3. Enjoy some real Thai cuisine.

You could do those things and still make your 7PM flight.

As far as where to stay? How much do you want to spend? If money is no object, then spring for a night at The Oriental. This hotel has often been rated as the best in the World. Otherwise, there are many other nice hotels for a little less money.

Boy did I drop the ball on my original request, apologies.

I prefer the sites versus nightlife. The traditional Thai versus modern. Send me to Temple versus shopping anyday.

Hotels, well price is always a consideration; but, not high on the agenda. A wonderful central to sites location is far more important.

Here is a one day trip in bangkok i recommend to our friends who visit.

Find yourself a licensed guide and have (he or she) them take you on this tour. Tell your guide NO SHOPPING!!!

Start around 8:00 AM then travel by private long tail boat through the city canals of Thonburi to see how the local Thai people live along the river. You will see vendors paddling their boats selling colorful flowers, exotic fruits, clothes and housewares. This is the real floating market for people who live on the canals and not staged for tourists. Then visit the Royal Grand Palace, Wat Po, Reclining Buddha, Emerald Buddha, and Wat Arun (the Temple of dawn). Include a nice lunch at a Thai restaurant on the river. Have your guide chose one with an ala-carte menu not buffet. Then visit Vinmanmek Mansion. Return your hotel.

All our friends enjoy this as it shows the real culture of Bangkok.

Hello Mjcasta
You Have Been Well Advised On What To Do In One Day, I Would Only Add Two Extras.
I Always Advise My Friends To Stay By The River, There Are Great Hotels Such As Shangrila, Peninsula, Oriental, Royal Orchid Sheraton, Hilton Which At This Time Of The Year You Will Pick Up Rather Cheaply. Our Friends Have Always Commented That They Sat At The Window And Watched The River Traffic Go By For Hours And I Still Do After All These Years. The Hotels Mentioned Are Available For Room Rates Starting At $140, Click Onto Hotel Specials On Their Websites. Secondly Bkk At Night Is Something To See, And Not All Of It Is Pretty, But If You Have An Open Mind And A Good Sense Of Humour You Will Survive. A Cab To Either Saladang Or Sukhumvit Will Only Cost A Few Dollars, Even If You Are Overcharged, So Dont Worry Too Much. The Area Around The Intercontental/hyatt Hotels Is A Great Meeting Spot For Young Thais And The Noise/aromas/pollution/traffic At 10pm Is Something To See And Talk About For Some Time To Come. Close By Are Two Huge Centres And Even If Shopping Is Not On The Agenda, It Wonderful To Window Browse The Expensive International Brand Galleries. You Will Love Bangkok, We All Do

Miss PUKE????

Yes, it is indeed called Miss Puke. Not only do you get a great massage but you also get a humorous business card to show your friends.

They have an internet site, but I fear I may break the no advertising rule if I put it here.

I had a 16 hours layover in BKK on my way to CGK.

I stayed at the Suk 11 hostel (http://www.suk11.com) after I read the many positive reviews online.

Just be sure that whatever hotel you stay in is close to a BTS Skytrain station as the majority of attractions in BKK can be reached with the Skytrain.
If not, you can spend about $5 bucks or so using a taxi or a tuk tuk.

On your short visit, you can check out the night life in the Patpong area after your night arrival. Or you can take a ride to the famous (and touristy) Khao San Rd area. The Skytrain runs til midnight however there's no stop near KSR.

Just take a Tuk Tuk and you should pay no more than 300 baht.

Or if you want to go to Patpong instead, you can take the Skytrain to the Patpong stop and take a taxi/tuk tuk back to your hotel (as it'll be after midnight by then). I used one of them motor taxi just for the experience lol

Then wake up early in the morning so you can hit up the temples. Beside having to walk under the heat, the temples can get crowded later in the day.

You can take the boat on the Chao Phraya River to get to the temples. You can take the Skytrain to get to the ferry terminal (I forgot the name but it's the last train's stop).
I believe it costs 100baht for an all day pass.

You can go to the Wat Phra Kaeo (complex of the Emerald Buddha & the Grand Palace), Wat Po (Reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun.

Avoid a visit to the Royal Barges and Jim Thompson's house. I felt my visit to those places was a waste of time plus they're a pain in the neck to get to.

You can find more info that might be helpful to you in here (http://frommers.com/destinations/bangkok/).

Have a great time in Bangkok! I know I did :D
