Travel Technology - VPN and content filters

I have noticed that when I connect my laptop to the network in a company that has a content filter, I am of course subjected to the filter unless I sign on through my VPN. Then, their filtering does not work.

Can anyone explain how this works?

If i understand this right, when you just connect to the company network, you are subject to the filters of that company's firewall/filter settings.

That same company can allow all VPN connections thru....

So when you connect to your VPN, that company is allowing your VPN connection, and for all intents and purposes, you are really logged into the internet via your VPN location as if you are at that VPN location, which I assume does not have content filters.

Does that mean that they don't have a log of the web pages I visit?

Say while I am on their network, I visit my bank's website- can they see that if I have logged on my VPN?

(I guess it's a slightly different question from the filtering question, but it is related).

Their log will show that you made a connection to the IP address of your VPN; but not where you go while on the VPN (to your bank's website).

the company may have software on your laptop that could allow them to capture that type of information.
