Other Middle East and Africa Frequent Flyer Programs - South African Airways Upgrade?
Hi. I am new to international travel outside of the UA network. I am planning a trip to SA in November and am interested in upgrading my trip the whole way. I am wondering if SA offers upgrades? If so, how is it done? Miles? Certs? Is anyone familiar with *A and working a ticket on two different carriers to get an upgrade? Thanks.

SA offers upgrades using miles to Voyager members subject to (almost non-existent) availability in the relevant booking class. I guess your question relates more to using UA miles, though, and their forum might get you a quicker response.
No *A upgrades with miles.
I went via LH and used my SWUs. If you want to go SAA, you'll need to pay to sit up front.
I was told that you can upgrade on LH with miles?????

I've never done it.
Suggest you take a look on the United web site (try this one: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51071,00.html#Upgrading%20on%20Lufthansa) and then take this question to the United Forum.
No, you cannot upgrade on SAA using *A miles... only SAA Voyager miles of paying the difference.
I think you can upgrade using LH miles only on LH Codeshare with SAA..

Perhaps so, but I called the Voyager desk here in the USA a month or two before my trip to make an upgrade to business on JNB-CPT-JNB, and, not only did I get the upgrade (I was standby business, but got it both times) they never debited my account for the miles!
