Been 20 years since I'd been to Montreal. This July will be there twice, staying in the downtown area (Victoria Square). Heard nice things about some restaurants -- Rosalie, Renoir, and Chez L'Epicier -- but as I said, I don't know much about the city anymore.
Your suggestions and comments?
Budget is about CAD35 a person excluding drinks, though can be a bit flexible.
Thanks!

35CAD is too low of a budget to enjoy the 3 places you mentioned..... Suggest you check out the forums egullet.com for the latest buzz, but in Victoria Sq you can enjoy both Boris Bistro and Holder as good basic montreal bistro fare. Avoid Otto at the W hotel at all costs....

It'll probably run you more than 35CAD, but a favorite of mine is Le P'tit Plateau, located near the Mt. Royal metro station. I'd describe it as French bistro food, with an open kitchen so you can see the food being prepared. It's a small, casual place and reservations are highly recommended. It's a bring-your-own-wine place, so that can help keep the cost down. You may be able to do an appetizer and main course for close to 35.

Another decent and low-key French place is Le Paris, on St. Catherine, a couple of blocks west of Guy if I remember correctly. Details, including sample menu and prices here: http://www.go-montreal.com/leParis/index_en.htm
