Travel Technology - In-room internet connections in Asia

So I'm roaming southeast Asia this winter for about 6 weeks, as a solo traveler. I was planning to bring the mini laptop I have, I've taken it on some other shorter trips and it's worked out pretty well.

What I'm wondering is, how hard is it to find hotels with in-room internet access in southeast Asia? Is it just relegated to major chain hotels? Are wireless access points in cities common, and how would I go about finding them?

I really prefer in-room internet access, because traveling solo I like to relax at the end of a day by chatting (either text chat or on Skype) with folks back home, and doing a bit of web browsing for the day ahead. And it's just more comfortable to do that in my room.

Cities I'm interested in particularly are:

Vietnam: Saigon and Hanoi
Cambodia: Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai
Laos: Luang Prabang and Vientiane

I expect that it varies hotel by hotel. I was in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam last year. Cambodia is backward--the hotels had Internet access in the business centers but not in the rooms. Hotels in Thailand (Bangkok and Chaing Mai) and Vietnam (Saigon) had in-room access, some wired and some WiFi. These were all high-end hotels.

The Sheraton Saigon (a fantastic hotel), blocked me from accessing Skype.

Major hotels in Thailand will have broadband access, but you may be unable to access Skype. CAT is the Thai monopoly for international calls, and I've heard that they have successfully lobbied the ISPs here to block international VOIP. Don't take it as gospel as I haven't tried it myself - only what I've heard.

We're using Skype and Vonage in Thailand and have not knowingly had problems with the ISP blocking it though I agree that is a risk as VOIP is still in the grey zone - not fully legal but laws aren't enforced.

I was in Saigon in December 2005 and in the hotel where I was staying, I wasn't able to access my corporate VPN. I could get internet connection but couldn't get onto the work network. My solution was to go to one of local bars/cafes and use their free wifi. My Vietnamese colleague told me that he does that all the time.

Thailand should not be a problem from my experiences.

I cannot report about hotels in Cambodia, but during my last visit the Foreign Correspondetcs Club (FCC) has a public hot spot in Phnom Penh (but not sure about costs).
