Air New Zealand Air Points - New Plymouth to Ruapehy/Ohakune suggestions

I am in the process of buying my last of many Air New Zealand trips....heading back to the states soon :(

I have just bought a ticket coming into New Plymouth and out of Taupo. (3 nights)

What would you suggest for my ITN?

I was thinking of the 'Forgotten World Highway.' Is it worth it?

I was thinking of staying in one night at the WHANGAMOMONA HOTEL. Then two nights in Ohakune. Then drive the last day through Tongaroro on my way to Taupo.

Any suggestions?

Judged by the number of responses this must be in the middle of no where...maybe I should plan again :)

Whangamomona IS the middle of nowhere. Personally I wouldn't plan on stopping their but it is supposed to be quaint.

The road is not the best, even by NZ standards. At this time of year watch out for possible water, slips or snow on the highest parts. I assume your dates will be fairly fixed so I'd be prepared for the need to drive the long way, via Wanganui, Marton and Taihape.

Depending on when exactly you go, the skifields may not yet be open, or fully open. If open then accommodation in Ohakune will be tight - be sure to book ahead.
