I thought award stays were free? I called the customer service number and they said that is the fee that is charged unless I show my certificate at check in. I had to give my credit card info when I booked this because Im going to arrive late. Is this normal? I have stayed before at Hiltons with my points and I never saw this before.

It's normal. Have a great trip and don't worry, you won't be charged..... :)

I am surprised that it was only 27 Euro. When I have stayed on an award certificate, the reservation always states that I will be charged full rate unless I present the certificate or if I don't cancel with sufficient lead-time. It is normal, but with the cert, it is always free except for incidentals or other charges incurred during my stays.

Once or twice, I have forgotten to give my certificate at check-in--actually, they didn't take it. I have never had a problem, but I have recently been very careful about ensuring that they get the certificate. What was interesting is that on both occasions where I didn't surrender the certificate, I got HH points, but no concomitant credit card charge. I called the hotel when the problem occurred, and they told me that they'd look into it--that was over a year ago, so I guess the points are mine to keep! :)
I called the customer service number and they said that is the fee that is charged unless I show my certificate at check in. This is the rate that the hotel will be reimbursed at by HHonors. Like others have said, you won't be charged it.
And don't expect that you can get away with just paying them the $27, instead of using the certificate--although that would be sweet when and if that day comes. That €27 rate is available to HHonors as the customer, and not to individuals.
If you don't provide the certificate and they make it an issue, they'd be looking at having you pay the real room rate.

A while back I had two award reservations at the Hilton Milan, each for a single night, abot ten days apart. The first reservation listed no charge, the second one listed the full rate of the room, as mentioned above. I called HHonors and they said it was just a quirk in the system. Both stays went without a hitch, and I was only charged for my incidentals.

For a one-night reward stay at a Hampton Inn, I was credited with 225 hhonors points and 15 airline miles. I paid nothing.
Should I usually expect that?

Expect, no
But it does happens very often ( on five of six of my last awards stays) its seems its almost sure to happen if you make a any charge to your room.
And yes I know these points are separate from those given by incidentals.
Personally this is one area I expect HH tighten up 22k extra points for two reward stays at the Cavalieri as in my case is a pretty nice present. :)

I just got my "bonus" points for a recent award stay at a HI, but I DIDN'T get points for the room service that I charged to the room from an external restaurant (they share the same lobby of a building and seem to have a shared billing arrangement of some sort). I'm not going to make a big stink out of it since it was only $40...
for our last reward stay a few weeks ago the folio showed the nightly rate HH paid the hotel, the weeknights were nothing, the weekends were discounted and charged off to HH - for those of you wondering, we didn't get the points!

Interesting enough, I stayed at a Homewood this past weekend and was told by the front desk manager that I had to pay a $20 (plus tax) fee for the room and send the folio in to HHonors and they would reimburse me.
A quick call to the Diamond desk cleared that problem right up. I'm glad I actually bothered to check out at the desk and get a copy of the folio. Had that problem about 3 mos ago at the Doubletree Orlando at Universal. They charged my card $89 for a 4 night Hhonors award stay.
:-: :-: Word to the wise: when using Hhonors certificates, double check your folio to make sure you're not getting charged what the hotel is supposed to charge the Hhonors program :-: :-:
I always comb every folio - I crawled my DH for buying his employee & himself beer in a HGI w/his corp card instead of charging it to one of their rooms. He said "it's just $13!" But w/the triple promo it's 520 points - can you tell I'm the "Point Keeper" in my family!
