Passengers Restrain Man on Airline Flight AP- May 22, 2006

An elderly man on an American Airlines flight was restrained by passengers, including television's "Dr. 90210," after he got out of his seat and shoved a flight attendant late Monday, officials said.

The jetliner landed safely in Los Angeles and police took the 80-year-old man, who did not speak English, to a hospital for a 72-hour mental observation, airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said.

"He evidently started to panic about 15 minutes before landing, when everyone is supposed to be buckled into seats," Castles said.

None of the five crew members or 122 passengers aboard the MD-80 plane from Austin, Texas, reported injuries, American Airlines spokesman Billy Sanez said.

The man hopped out of his seat in coach and marched into first class, Sanez said.

Dr. Robert Rey, a plastic surgeon who practices martial arts, told The Associated Press he got out of his seat and intervened when he heard the man make a "big noise" as he pushed a female flight attendant toward the cockpit.

"When you get a black belt, at that stage your brain just clicks into action," the doctor said. "I restrained this gentleman in a very aggressive way without hurting him."

Another passenger helped as the man kicked and screamed, Rey said. The doctor said he also checked the man's vital signs and determined he was not having a medical emergency.

The flight attendant "was shook up but not hurt," Rey said.

Flight crew members described the man as "very frail," Sanez said. He had been scheduled to board a connecting flight in Singapore after landing in Los Angeles.

Rey, who stars on the E! Network reality show "Dr. 90210" about a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, was returning home after taping a segment for "The Insider."

Rey also appears as himself on a Carl's Jr. commercial in which he advises a chicken to undergo breast augmentation surgery

Any idea why an FM apparently was not involved?
Is there at least one FM on each MD80 flight?

What's an FM?

What's an FM?

I believe it's a radio frequency. AFAIK all MD80s have it, although RJs can only pickup AM.

I wish MD80s had FHM on board instead of American Way.

My friend, Dan, said it had no static at all.

Why do we need an FM or an AM or a FAM to tackle a frail 80 year old man?

Agreed... it would've been easier to shoot him.

The problem with posting AA news items in Newsstand is that very few AA FTers read that forum (this has been discussed before in ORP). I've posted identical stories here that feature AA, and they'll get thousands of hits, compared to less than a hundred on Newsstand when someone posts a similar article about AA there. If the topic is generic and about the airline industry I'll post on Newsstand, but I actually prefer seeing articles on AA posted here, no matter who posts them.

Thanks Tom. I had scanned the previous eight hours of the AA forum to make sure that I wasn't repeating the information. AND (before the chorus of Do A Search starts) I also searched all forums using Dr. 90210 as the search term. No matches were found. (Before posting this, I searched again and still no matches.) So, I figured that I wasn't repeating the information. However, I have noticed an anomaly. If you search using the term Dr 90210, notice no period after the r, then the search feature finds the two posts, but matching on 90210.

Dr. Rey is the best! First he'll attack you & mess you all up with his martial arts, then he'll put your face back together - and throw in some DD implants just for fun!!

I am not sure you need a black belt 90210 or not to subdue an octogenarian looney.

Note as to searching one can search all forums. And the AA ness of it is that it was an AA flight. Really matters not a whit for this type of news.

My post wasn't intended as a judgment on the necessity of this thread. I was simply pointing out that the topic (with a link) had also been mentioned in the Newsstand forum earlier in the day. I figured anyone who was particularly interested might want to see that, too.
