The Navy air base (Now Marine) where Tom Cruise had "a need for speed" could be the site of the next SAN airport.

Voters may be asked to decide whether Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will be the site for a new regional airport.

This is despite the objections of the military.

An Airport Authority committee tasked with studying various locations around the county voted to move forward with Miramar as the only choice.

A final vote will take place early next month.

They might want to check with the current owners of the property before they make plans. :td:

The SAGA continues.Wasn't this same idea talked about in the 80s?I just don't see big jets taking off in the direction of La Jolla,or doing final approaches over Scripps,or a joint share with the Marines

North Island, North island should be the cry.
Commuters through Coronado a'fore I die.
Let los ricos share the pain,
While from the tolls SAN will taste the gain.
Only Point Loma they'll have to clear.
Before the pax are served with beer.
...And from the roof of the old Del Cor
All the shingles will soon be tore!

I've been following this saga as my wife is from SD. You're right of course, especially considering the Marines have said on numerous occasions that sharing Miramar is not up for discussion. I suspect san Diego is going to have to put up with Lindberg Field for a couple more decades... no bad thing, IMO it's a very nice airport.

It was talked about when the Navy announced they were moving their guys out to Pensacola or whereever they are now.

The large jumbos that take off from Miramar now head on a NW angle, over the Torrey Pines Gofl course area, avoiding most populated areas... just a few office blocks are nearby.

The landing path is currently uninhabited for miles as long as they start back about 15 miles from the I-15, it shouldn't be an issue. Most flights already approach from 30+ miles east of SAN as it is.

I live in Mira Mesa, about 5 minutes from the Miramar main gate, and wholeheardedly support this measure. SAN needs a real world class airport to be a real world class city. Lindburgh itself now is a nice little airport, but the operative word is little. I want to see some NS flights to Europe/Asia, that's for sure.

The Navy F-14 drivers, Radar Intercept Officers (RIOs), and all of their support personnel moved to Fallon Naval Air Station in northwest Nevada
(NAS Fallon). The F-14s are being retired from active service now.
The East Coast equivalent of what used to be NAS Miramar is NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

I dunno if you're going to get your wish. As I understand it, one of the reasons BA cancelled their direct flight was that it canabalised sales to LAX. SAN is also a leisure market resulting in lower numbers of premium revenue passengers.

That was always my impression.Passenger load would not warrent non stops to Asia or Europe. They have always tried to sell the locals that because the runway is not long enough to take off with a fully loaded Jumbo, that airlines would not schedule the non-stops.Its passenger load not runway length.Developers want to develop Lindbergh Field into housing and business property, and close out the daily double by building a multi-Billion Dollar A/P

That is also true. AFAIK the BA 777 that plied that route couldn't take on any cargo because it would have been too heavy, of course that affects the economics too.
