What a weird story. MCIE mechanic claims that a 762 came into the Kansas City maintenance base containing up to 1000 mice, some alive, most dead:

Nasty. Well, just make sure when the oxygen masks deploy, you give your child and those seated next to you a mouse, before taking one for yourself.

I particularly enjoyed the "Joe's Carpet" jingle.

Leave it to the local news "Action News Investigators" to equate mice on board with terrrorism. I can only imagince the teasers they played all day long to try to entice their viewers into watching that night.

That's a lot of extra weight. Dunno what an average mouse weighs, but if it's half an ounce, that's more than 31 pounds of mouse. With fuel prices as high as they are, and rumours that AA is skimping on filling the water tanks, the mice on this airplane might equal almost four gallons of water.

:D Excellent!

How about a "Bring your cat along for free for the all-it-can-eat mouse buffet" promo??

I would be surprised if there aren't mice on every plane, alive and/or dead. A couple of the little buggers sneak on the plane when it is in for maintenance and before you know it there is a thriving community.

Looks like half an ounce may have been a disturbingly close guess. :p

I love during the wrap-up at the end the reporter said AA in a statement admitted it was only around 17 live mice! Way to go AA, keep cutting back on maint and the critters may literally cut/chew wires!

Maybe I'll bring a little Decon aboard my next flight to drop down the aisles.

I bet you all will think differently the next time you see someone bring a cat onboard. ;)

AA - We know why our mice fly.

Reminds me of the scene from the Fifth Element where they use the flame thrower in the wheel wells just before take off to clear out all the creepy crawly critters. Maybe a new task to add to the maintenance check list?

This reminds me of the accounts of rats on columbus-era sailing ships.

One has to wonder about the health ramifications. Breathing particles of mouse feces is not good passenger health. Here I was worried about the FA touching the rim of my glass.

AA had better do something about this and soon. Their low service levels are already widely known. The last thing they need is for the public to perceive them as vermin-ridden.

This means 1000 mice were chewing on the avionic wires at one time or another. Makes me feel safe, oh what do I have to worry about those mice ridden 767-200's never make it to STL. I hear the mice are upset about the premium class cutbacks as well, they have been surviving on confiscated year old bistro bags. ;)

In reaction to the news investigation, American Airlines representative Tim Smith said, "American has undertaken an aggressive cost cutting campaign over the last few years. We will be ensuring that any mice aboard our aircrafts are at FAA minimums. We are also looking at enhancements to our popular Buy-on-Board and Duty Free Programs"

I'm bringing my cat, Mittens, along with me later this week to MIA. If anyone asks about it - I'll tell AA that she won't charge AA for her mousing services during flight.

Pickles has a cat that could serve, if memory serves me.

I thought it was dangerous for mice /rats to be on planes. Don't they eat through wires?

It's pretty common knowledge that commercial aircraft are widely infested with pestilence - there are many dark and warm spaces where creatures can set up shop, so to speak.

No doubt and it's called Hantavirus (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/index.htm)

...i think it would be a much cuter movie at least, although "I want these motherfrakin mice off this motherfrakin plane!!" doesn't have quite the same ring to it. ;)

Cruise ships have lifeboat drills, right?

How about at the mid-point of every flight, deploy the masks and depressurize the cabin. Good practice for the pax and solves the mouse problem at the same time.
