Turns out that an outfit in Portland, Maine, called The Corporate Library (www.corporatelibrary.com), is passing out letter grades on CEO pay practices and the composition of company boards.
Among the companies the Corporate Library analyzes are about 65 of Minnesota's larger public firms. And about half the state's companies get A's and B's.
The top tier includes ASV Inc. -- the Grand Rapids-based maker of innovative utility vehicles that don't tear up the ground -- which has been one of Minnesota's best stocks to own in recent years; Arctic Cat; Graco Inc, the global manufacturer of spraying equipment for factories; Synovis Life Technologies; Techne Corp.; C.H. Robinson; Ceridian; Donaldson Co.; Fastenal, and Select Comfort.
The lowest-rated companies include Northwest Airlines, PepsiAmericas, U.S. Bancorp, Nash Finch, Target and UnitedHealth Group.
