I will be in Shanghai from May 21-24 and am interested in buying a good silk carpet and having a suit made. Any recommendations for either are appreciated.

Thank you.

I would second the silk carpet. Perhaps Moondog can comment on good places for both Beijing (will be there in August) and Shanghai.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on sh (or I would have done so by now), but I know a place in bj that sells rack suits that you can get altered in the same building. (For those with close to standard body types, I think rack suits are better than tailored suits because you don't need to worry about the style.)

Anyway, my bj place is in the fake market opposite the Kunlun. Their suits (Armani, Zegna, Boss, etc) all sell for y500 (I chanced upon a regular Chinese customer during my first visit and that was his price). While the suits are almost certainly fakes, I have more than a few snobby friends (i.e. people used to spending $2k+) that have declared them to be perfect. BTW, tailoring costs an extra y100+, depending on the extent of the alterations.

For shirts, I love the Paul Smith offerings in Shanghai. In fact, I picked up a slick dress shirt for Vulcan last year for around y250 (the casual shirts are y150 or so).

Edited to add: I just realized that the post I was replying to was about carpets, not suits. I don't have much experience in that area, but I was in Kashgar over the holiday (check my trip report, if interested) and found some amazing rugs. If you have 20k NW or UA miles and an extra ~3 days, you can go out there (and even open jaw from somewhere like Lhasa).
