JAL Mileage Bank - Earning Miles by flying Cathay Pacific

Hello,

Last year this forum provided me with amazing information about my flight from Tokyo to San Francisco. And again, I'm going to ask for your help. I have 2 questions.

My time in Japan is coming to an end and I will be returning home to Ireland this summer. The ticket I will be getting is with Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong. Looking at the JAL site it says that I can earn miles with this airline but it seems like the Fukuoka-Hong Kong leg of the flight will not be eligible.
Is this so?

I have arranged my ticket so that I will have a stopover in Hong Kong. I'm thinking of visiting Sydney (again with cathay pacific). I'm assuming I will be able to earn miles with this. Again, is this so?

Thanking you in advance.

Joe

It all depends on the booking class on Cathay Pacific.

There are some booking codes in economy that earn you no miles so you should check with JAL's Mileage Bank as to what codes earn you miles before you book your ticket.

JAL Mileage Bank obviously want you to earn miles on JL instead of CX and that is why flights between Japan and HKG/TPE are not eligible for mileage accumulation.

See:

http://www.jal.co.jp/en/jalmile/flight/cx.html

But you would need to contact JL MB people to ask exactly which booking codes do they mean by "special economy class".

Note that you earn 100% miles on CX flights in asiamiles (except Q, N, S, and G class fares).

So maybe you'd like to consider that alternate programme instead?

Thanks very much for your reply (and I'm sorry about my late reply). Unfortunately, all my miles are with JAL so to change over to another milage programme doesn't make so much sense. But, if I will not earn any miles then I might just sign up all the same, I will have nothing to lose.

Again, thank you so much,

Joe
