I read with interest the other thread where FTers discussed tipping $20 in the hope of getting an upgrade, whether this technique works and whether it is ehtical etc.
What about some survey on this - do Front Desk staff upgrade you for other reasons, such as that you are checking in with a Centurion Card, that you are very well-dressed? Or that you look/appear a big shot?
Celebrities often get upgraded, from what I understand. Likewise they get the better tables at nice restaurants.
What about the converse? Do they put you in stingy little rooms if they imagine you will not return? If you are travelling with children?
