So here's my story...
My wife and I are scheduled to have a getaway to Boston this weekend to see our Red Sox. Trip has been planned since the winter. As we're about to leave for the airport, I duck into the restroom, and...well, lets just say there was a lot of blood where they shouldn't be. I have a history of kidney stones, so I'm no stranger to that.
At this point, I have no other real symptons, and I'm supposed to be on a 8:55 flight. Its about 7:35 (I live a few minutes from IAD). I call JetBlue, and tell them that I am having these symptoms, not sure yet what is going on, but I need to get it checked out. They put me on the only flight that has seats on it, the 11:10, and charge me the $25 change fee. Fine.
So, I run to the doc, consult with the urologist, and the group of them conclude I am indeed about to go through another kidney stone episode. I've passed 2 in the past 2 years, and the last one was a horrible 8 day ordeal. So I know what I'm in for. Doc strongly advises against travel.
I called JetBlue, explained the situation to them, and without any fuss agreed to give me a full credit, and if I could provide a note from my doctor, a full refund. I did so later today, I'll report back when the refund comes through.
I'm not sure if this is standard for all airlines, as I've never been in a situation like this. But I was impressed by how it was handled and their willingness to understand my situation.
As it turned out, the doctors were right, and now I'm in the midst of a kidney stone situation. So far, it doesn't look like it will be as bad as last time.
I feel worse about my very disappointed wife, who REALLY needed a weekend away. I will make it up to her!
