I just checked out of there today. While there was evidence of construction, I did not notice anything that enhanced my stay. They are putting a small business center in the concierge lounge, for example, but didn't have anything in it yet but a fax machine.
There was a long walk outside to get to the fitness center because the interior hallway was closed for renovation, but of course with LA weather an outdoor stroll is not a problem. My room itself was a standard "old" Marriott room but with the newer bedding.
I will say that every employee I met had a smile on their face and really seemed eager to please--a big change from my last stay there over a decade ago.

According to the front desk employee at check in this evening, the renovation is proceeding from bottom up. The first space upgraded was the downstairs ballroom. Rooms on the first floor (west wing) are now under visible construction (hence the fitness center detour); the parking lot to the west is closed.
Am staying in a very tired room on one of the concierge levels. Wouldn't know it was anything but a regular room if hadn't been informed upon check in.
Also of note for all LAX-area hotels: due to new airport rules, most hotels have switched to shared shuttles. (Marriott actually shared previously with Renaissance, but to avoid higher access fees there apparently must be at least three properties per shuttle).
