Have a question, maybe best answered by our pal William. I had to juggle some awards reservations, replacing a 6 night stay with a 2. Booked and cancelled on spg.com; the points have not been added back to my account. at present, am out points for 8 nights! My question, how long will it take for the redeposit?
Thanks to all!
BTW - did a search in forum for "redeposit", got one thread that looked promising, but didn't fit my situation.
Call Customer Service and they should be able to recredit your points immediately.
Immediate has been my experience.. I agree that a call is in order...

In case the other two above weren't convinicing enough, I vote for give them a call. I've had too many problems canceling rooms online and they usually get it right on the phone.
Although, I do detest calling only because they ALWAYS ask me to confirm my email address and it NEVER changes! I avoid calling for that one reason.

I have canceled many times on the web and my points appeared back in my account very quickly. However when I canceled on the phone I had to call again to get my points back. YMMV
Good Luck

This is just my perception but there seem to be quite a few glitches to Starwood websites. Many are minor and not noticeable but there are problems here and there. Does anyone know if the main SPG website is linked to say each individual hotel websites and how information is transmitted through between them? I've noticed that some hotel websites are better, for example the W.
This is one of the problems I've encountered. And I agree with many posts, a call has always solved the problem for me. And always, the rep tells me that they see the cancellation but the points being added back was never in process.
Also, if you cancel by phone, you have to double check and let them know that points were used and would like credited back. For some reason, I've noticed the credit back is neglected on the first call if you don't remind them.
Just cancelled 3 rooms in Tahiti and the points were back in in 24 hours.
I've had to cancel/change award reservations online several times in the past year. I have not had nearly the luck in terms of relatively immediate re-credit as some of the above posters. I've had to wait several weeks for them to repost on multiple occasions.
Funny how it works 100% perfectly when you make a res and have points taken out, but YMMV quite a bit when you cancel a res and expect the points to be redeposited.  :p

Had to cancel an award booking last week. Although it was made by phone, I was able to cancel it using the website,. It took about two days for the points to reappear in my account. No problems, no redeposit fees, no lost points...as expected.

I have not booked anything with my SPG points before. If I book and have to cancel ~~
1. As per the above post, there are no fees/penalties. Correct?
2. Can I cancel up until the last 24 hours? I probably won't know until then.
Thank you :)

I've never been charged any redeposit fees, but late cancellation charges do apply:
from the online T&C:
9. USE OF STARPOINTS: HOTEL AWARDS
9.1 Participating Property standard guarantee policies and cancellation policies apply for all hotel Awards, as well as all other reservation and use of services requirements. These requirements include standard reservation requirements such as, but not limited to, minimum length of stay requirements and charges for late cancellation. Credit cards may be required to guarantee a Free Night Award reservation. Failure to cancel a guaranteed reservation within the permitted cancellation time will result in the cancellation fee charged by that property, whether it is a monetary charge and/or the loss of the redeemed Starpoints. Cancellation policies vary by property.

Thank you ^ I think it is 24 hours but will be sure before I book :)

It's not always 24 hours before arrival to avoid cancelation penalties. It's as much as 3 days prior in my experiences. Just check the cancelation policy when you book, that's the best way.

Just a bump...
I canceled one 2-night stay last night and booked a new 1-night stay at the same property (Four Points by Sheraton). The points for the 2-night stay have NOT yet been redeposited, but they surely took out the points for the "additional" 1-night stay immediately. ;)
I'll wait a couple more days to see if they redeposit automagically, otherwise I suppose I'll just call in.
It's a shame it's not instantaneous. My favorite airlines redeposit miles immediately after I cancel an award reservation. @:-)^

Thanks for the link, Kathy! ^
So it seems there is further uncertainty... If the points are not back in my account when I get home tonight, I'll give them a call and have them make sure it gets done.

And they were redeposited sometime in the last 3 hours. So, looks like it took roughly 18 hours for the redeposit (if anyone's keeping score).

I just cancelled an award stay two days ago and the points were redeposited back into my account immediately.
