Hope they do a good job with this place the Wyndam which was in new of a lift was the best located hotel in the area bar none.
Seems SPG is increasing their presence in Tampa after being almost non-existent.

Brand new Embassy Suites also sked to open in the Fall just across the channel.

... Westin Washington, DC City Center ...

Wasn't this Wyndham a Westin before? And wasn't it marginal then? And wasn't it marginal as a Wyndham?

Based on this, I can't get too excited by this announcement. It seems like at least one of the hotels is in search of an identity several times.

I believe this was the Sheraton City Center prior to being a Westin. I stayed there several times back then. It was fine. Nothing special, but I don't know that I'd describe it as marginal. Small rooms, if I remember correctly.

So the New Orleans Wyndham Canal Place becomes a Westin once again, huh? What's old is new again.

Wild.

Has anyone actually stayed here since it's become a Westin. As far as I can tell they changed the signs and the beds. Looks kinda sub par for a Westin...

Was at the Wyndham Downtown (1400 M St) yesterday, which is the Wyndham I understand is being converted to Westin (oddly, the Wyndham City Center doesn't appear to be the one that'll be the Westin City Center... instead the Wyndham Downtown becomes the Westin City Center.. at least as it was explained to me).

The hotel is currently terrible in all respects -- awful service staff... the ceiling started caving in in the second floor restaurant on Thursday evening and water was coming through the recessed lights... food awful... the property has been scheduled to go through a renovation, it was supposed to be done a couple months back but hasn't yet started. If the renovation is substantial enough and if the senior management of the hotel is replaced it may be worth checking out.

*Bump*

Anybody stayed there recently? Keen to get an update on the services and rooms...!

Thanks

I stayed at the Westin Harbor Island last Wednesday; they had a great FL resident rate of only $119. The hotel was hard to find and get to (Hertz Neverlost still has it as the Wyndham.)

Front desk staff was friendly. When i reached my room, they had put me right On next to the elevator, so i went back down and asked for another room away from the elevator -- and the desk clerk gave me a corner suite!

The corner suite was spacious, with a living room, bedroom, dressing area and separate water closet, but it was not in good repair. Overhead light fixture was out above the shower, one of the lights above the vanity was out, one of the electric outlets on the desk was out as well. Carpet had some stains. Bath had been converted to a heavenly bath and bed to a heavenly bed, although it was not as comfortable as heavenly beds usually are (scratchy sheets!)

Breakfast was deliicious the next morning and the service was great -- but when I went to check out noticed they had charged me $495 for the room! There is no way that suite was worth $495; it was just too rundown. The front desk adjusted my bill to the correct rate with no problem ^

Overall it was "OK", but has the potential to be much better. The service was good. If you get a room with a view, this could end up being a nice spot. It IS next to the Convention Center though, which could mean long lines and rowdy convention attendees. Getting to/from the highway is also pretty time-consuming.

On a side note, I discovered that I left an expensive Clarisonic facial brush in my room when I got home. I know exactly where I left it and called the hotel immediately, but have still not heard back.

Edited to note: On my third phone call within 5 days to inquire whether my Clarisonic had been found, they showed no record of my prior calls nor of having found it. When I mentioned my willingness to offer a reward, however, the operator said she would check one more place -- and suddenly it turned up. Glad to have it back...but their lost and found procedures clearly need work...

I'm actually writing this from a corner suite as we speak (I'm waiting for a coworker who is probably taking the longest shower in the history of man-kind.)

As a Gold, I got upgraded to a corner suite, as the above poster described. I'd like to think it was because of my wit and charm that got me upgraded, but it was probably the front desk assoc. taking pity on me. :p

At first glance the hotel is impressive. Lobby area is very attractive, all ornate in marble and nicely kept up. I was worried it would look like someone spewed pastels everywhere, as is typical in FL, but surprisingly I haven't seen one pastel color on the property.

Room (ending in 01) could be fantastic. Superb even. But, regrettably, it's not. Definitely a Wyndham room still with a (hard) Heavenly bed. The carpet looks like it was salvaged from floor of the national "can't hold on to anything support group" headquarters. Honestly, I've never seen so many stains per sq. foot anywhere. All sorts of different colors, and textures. Yuck.

The Heavenly shower only had one nozzle working, and with only a trickle for the water pressure. It was a tease seeing that other shower-head.

The walls are all pock-marked from gouges and spackling.

I had to unplug a lamp to plug my laptop in (who designs these rooms without outlets for computers? UGH!). There's wi-fi, but a very weak signal, so I'm tethered by my ethernet connection. No biggie.

Restaurant is decent.

Service, overall, has been excellent. Although they're doing a three-stooges routine trying to get me a FedEx that showed up yesterday.

Hopefully they'll be pumping money into the rooms with the Westin reflagging. Overall I'm content here. Especially w/ a $139 suite as a Gold.

The San Diego conversion seems curious as there is already a Westin San Diego only two blocks away at Horton Plaza. Does that mean the Horton Plaza property is likely to lose its Westin name?

Keep in mind that many Wyndham franchisees were not exactly thrilled when Cendant purchased the chain. Given that Cendant (now Wyndham) has managed to run Ramada, HoJo's, et al. into the ground, I don't blame franchisees for jumping ship. I just hope that Westin doesn't lower their standards in order to garner additional hotel conversions.

The Westin web site lists the Washington, DC City Center hotel as opening in Dec., 2006. We are currently in Dec., but a reservation search for DC pulls up no such property. That suggests that the opening is unlikely to be soon. Does anyone have further information?

But some of them actually switched from Westin to Wyndham in the plast just so that they could run themselves into the ground (like Washington DC City Center). OK, maybe they were previously kicked out of Westin rather than making the switch voluntarily. So, now I'm supposed to believe this marginal hotels have had an epiphany and will be better than last time they were Westin's? OK, maybe the physical plant will be for a while, but what about management attitide? Call me dubious about this whole thing.

is there any chance this company owns the wyndham in Aruba?

Yes. Supposedly they are completing renovation to Westin by Dec 20, 2006. I hope so, because I booked it thru Wyndham at the old rate, and they're honoring the reservation for this Xmas.

Side note: I just joined here and wanted to thank everyone for the incredible information that I've absorbed by reading these forums posts. This is quite a resource for travelers, and it's you air/hotel/car warriors that make it happen. Thanks again!

Next month, hubby & I will be doing a quick weekend trip to TPA (he wants to go to the racetrack, I'll just do some walking around :) ). We usually stay at the Grand Hyatt, but thought we might try a Starwood. The previous comments didn't seem that great about this property, but I saw that the full conversion was expected in Dec 2006. Any recent stays, improvements in treatment etc-- or should I just book the Hyatt ??

Hi mauld,
Which racetrack is you hubby visiting? Tampa Bay Downs??
and when are the dates of your visit?
I live very close there and visit the place often enough ( it takes 11 mins from my garage at home to the owners parking lot:) ) but not as often as I used to.
Have owned racehorses in the past ( with friends) who raced at TBD.

My only recent visit to Westin has been only to the restaurant/bar so cannot comment much about the place ( seems pretty much the same as before)

In case you are so inclined there is a brand new Embassy Suites next to the convention center.

Yes, TBD is the track, but we are not quite sure which weekend yet. Right now we are leaning towards the Hyatt, but was wondering if the Starwood property was of the same caliber. Unfortunately, while the ES may be good, I'd rather get the points/stay credits at either a Starwood or Hyatt. Not to mention the upgrades I'd expect at those or the RC access at the Hyatt.
