While in Singapore, we're thinking of visiting Bintan Island in Indonesia. How
safe is it? Any recommendations for places to stay that's not outrageously
expensive? (US$100)

There was a thread ealier this month on Bintan that can give some background although I don't think it covers sub-$100 hotels.

It isn't. There are two sides to Bintan: Bintan Resorts (http://wikitravel.org/en/Bintan_Resorts) (Lagoi), the northern bit, is a Singaporean colony with facilities and prices to match, meaning there's no cheap accommodation. The "real" Bintan (http://wikitravel.org/en/Bintan) is the rest of the island, but most visitors go there for cheap beer and whorehouses, and you'll need to get an advance visa as main port Tanjung Pinang doesn't have visa-on-arrival facilities. (The Resort's port does.)

But you get a hotel in the resort area around 100 US$ for sure.
