Air New Zealand Air Points - OT: award flights to Canada

I'm trying to figure what options I might have to burn some miles for award flights to help fund a trip to Canada from NZ late in 2007 (yeah, I know, that really is planning in advance), and thought you good folk might have some ideas. I have a small AP$ balance (< $1,000, but don't expect to earn any more there), a small aeroplan balance (circa 50k, that I am still earning a little to), a bigger Flying Blue balance (120,000 - not earning any more there either), and just over 500k NZ AmEx Membership Rewards points (still earning there). We'll be a party of four; me, Mrs KBD, toddler will be nearly four, baby will be 16 months, and need to get from NSN to YHZ (Halifax, NS). I appreciate the added complexity from having the bigger party.

Anyway, maybe I could buy two tickets on NZ to LAX/SFO and swap my MR points to TG's Royal Orchid programme for another couple of NZ seats as *A awards. Then maybe buy some SkyTeam tickets from LAX/SFO to YHZ and get more by burning the FB miles. I'd be happy enough on NZ in Y (though happier in Y+), but would aim to redeem for F on the intra-North American flights, though in that case just for three seats because we could handle the baby as a lap infant on a four-five hour transcontinental which we wouldn't even consider on the 12 hour transPacific.

Or maybe Air Tahiti Nui to JFK (cash, and FB miles, and MR points?), and AC to YHZ (cash and aeroplan miles)?

Or ... are there any other strange combinations I might want to consider?
