Is wifi as common in Asia as it is in Europe in airports and hotels? Do most airline terminals and lounges have wifi? What about hotels? Im primarily concerned with Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

You will find many locations in Hong Kong with this capability -- including airport terminals / airline clubs.
In Thailand I was able to get signals in a few airports, but not sure about around town. There will certainly be hotels, bars/restaurants, cyber cafes, ... that have it available.
As far as Taiwan -- I have not been, but a utility that I have with my laptop shows wireless sites in countries that we have accounts with (iPass) and iPass shows 828 pre-approved wireless hotspots around the country -- so I am guessing there will be plenty of connectivity (McDonalds and KFC's were all over the list -- so you can get clogged arteries as well).

In Bangkok, yes. Most Starbucks (and they're everywhere) has it, along with a myriad of other coffee shops. Many have taken it further -- FREE access -- to compete with Starbucks (where you have to buy a card). Also, many hotels (virtually ALL the major ones) have wifi available in the rooms and lobbies, in addition to their business centers.

The last I heard, over half of Taipei was Wi-Fi. Last year when I visited, peopel said that all the McDonalds had it. Taipei is cool!

From my apartment (which is in one of the "hot spots") the service is not extremely quick, but adequate for general web surfing. I wouldn't want to be d/l large files though.

Taiwan is the highest wi-fi equipped country in the world according to the FT. Tons of free as loads of people dont have a persoanl secure network.I find Taiwan, HKG way ahead of anywhere in Europe for Wi-Fi, OP seems to indicate that he was visiting a 3rd world internet black hole :D
