I received an offer for an Amex Gold Plus Rewards Card today in the mail. No fee for the first year (normally $150). 50,000 MR points after spending $1000 in two months. Sounds too good to be true! Never had an Amex before, besides hubby's corporate card (which has been cancelled). I've read the mice type and it looks okay. Any catches any one can think of in their experience with Amex MR and this type of promotion? Thanks!

are you sure it's 50,000 points not 5,000?

I'm sure its 50,000 points. If even says on the envelope "get two free roundtrip airline tickets", which is typically 50,000 points (25,000 for one). And inside it definitely says 50,000 points. That's why I'm worried there's a catch!

Wow, wish I had gotten that one last year. I got the regular Rewards Gold card and only 10,000 free points with my free year. The only thing I would say is run up points for a year then redeem them before you cancel the card (assuming you don't want to pay the fee).

Wow, is this offer targeted?
a month or so ago I inquired on the offer for membership rewards. That time was only 5000 bonus points available. Can anyone apply for this offer?
Is there an offer code? Or just the phone number. Can you share it?
thanks.

What's the bonus code, its four numbers?

I called the phone number 1-877-621-7785 and asked if it was targeted. The representative said yes and asked for an RSVP number (unique to each letter sent). In looking at the application, the bonus ID is 6033 (not unique). Good luck! I think we'll go for it.

Rewards Plus Gold is a great card. My wife and I both have one. That was one of the benny's I saw. You get 5 fee-free additional cards, I haven't seen that with any other AMEX charge product. As well as the 2/1 (first year) and 1.5/1 (there after) point earnings for Air and Hotel partners. Didn't get any bonus points when I signed up, that sounds like a good deal!

Do you have a number that begins with a letter and then a bunch of numbers after it? They are saying that this is the rSVP number...
Should start with a G and a string of numbers....
Thanks a lot !!!!

I called very calmly.
Gave half the 'secret handshake" :) as given here.
When asked for the RSVP said that I had misplaced letter.
She looked me up , by name , address, zipcode.
shot down.
She very kindly offered to take my application , but no 50,000 bonus M.R. points. I of course thank her for her time, wished her a good day and hung up.

Sorry for the newbie question....but, (I got the same 50k amex offer) what's the best thing to do with 50K Amex points?
I currently have Hilton HHonors point, Midwest Airlines, and Northwest Airlines accounts. Can I transfer the Amex points to them, or is there a better idea?
Thanks!

Amex MR --> Hawaiian Airlines --> Hilton Honors.
Will yield you 1 Amex point --> 2HHpoint this way instead of the direct transfer which yields only 1 -> 1.3
That means you just got yourself 100,000 HH points.

got the offer myself. Vacillated a bit then bit the bullet. Only "catch" seems to be that I must charge $1K before end of June to the the 50K points. No problem.
Definitely seems to be targeted.

Ok, now I'm just plain pissed off. I've had a PLAT a couple of months and spent $30K. Never a single bonus for anything, other than the "2x everyday spending."
Instead of rewarding us, they give new people 100K for getting GOLD cards.... I'm paying $400/year for the PLAT, and spending a reasonable amount.
I've also spent maybe $10K between Delta and Starwood cards.
While to a certain degree I'm happy for the people raking in the points, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Well at least you have the "privilige" of a PLATIMUM card and knowing that only the "very few chosen" ones have one..... :D

My mom got targetted for the 50k amex gold offer.. She only has one credit card-- a merrill+ with a 30k+ limit, which she uses heavily (points are transferrable to BAEC) and PIFs every month.
I think the offer is targetted to people with good credit and high limits but not a lot of TLs. It's working, in that she's definitely using the Amex; 2x points convertable to CO miles is a lot better than the 1 point/dollar that M+ gives. But I'm pretty sure she'll cancel it when they want to start charging the annual fee-- she's conservative like that.

Plat in countries that ARE invite only actually does have some more benefits.. :D
Sorry, can you remind me what TL means.. My mind is kaput today. :D
I'm thinking total limit or total liabilities.. but I can't get what you're saying..
I have no liabilities, and $30K+ for your mom isn't a low limit.

Tradelines-- credit cards, charge cards, lines of credit, that sort of thing. Any revolving credit product generally counts.

Oh, crap.
I've got 3 AMEX, and 2 MC :(
:P
Probably getting the USAIR VISA and perhaps the UA VISA soon too..
So I guess their point is limiting the bonuses you get, as they do with not allowing repeat bonuses.
I might have gotten a small bonus with Preferred Gold Plus or whatever the hell the top Gold was, when I had it for a month, then 17.5K with Delta, and 6K + another potential 6K with Starwood.
Sigh, oh well.

I called the above phone number and they answered Rewards Plus Gold Card but when I gave them the bonus code they asked for a "response code"? The CS person knew about the 50,000 bonus point offer but said I had to have received an offer letter. So, how do I get an offer letter???

Of course if the International airline program, Fine Hotels and resorts program, Cruise Privileges, Airport club Access Program, Gold Preferred Starwood membership, Compementary Car Rental Memberships and all the other Platimum benefits are of no use to you... why do you pay $400 per year for the card?
Yes they are targeting new gold members with this promotion but Platinum members get the extra benefits that gold members don't get as their 'reward'.
Use your Platinum card wisely and it will save you many dollars over many yaears. To me thats a much better deal than getting a one off bonus!
FYI I don't have any Amex cards and wasn't rageted for this promotion.

I guess my partner and I were VERY lucky. I was able to register both of our cards. I gave them the code provided here and spoke with the agents for a while and they registered us both for it. The promotion ended last month.
